WANG'S PACE/CULLINET CONNECTION
LETS VS USERS QUERY IBM MAINFRAME DATABASES
Lowell, Mass. (September 15, 1986)--Wang Laboratories, Inc., today
announced the PACE/Cullinet Connection, a software package that allows Wang VS
users to retrieve mainframe data for Use on department-level VS systems.
The PACE/Cullinet Connection lets VS users access the most widely
Installed database management systems on IBM") or IBM-compatible
mainframes. Users make their requests for information through the menu
selection screens provided by the Query facility of Wang's Professional
Application Creation Environment (PACE). The queries are automatically
translated into a format that allows Cullinet's Information Center Management
System (C/ICMS) to supply the information, which is then presented to the user
In PACE format.
Corporate data retrieved from a mainframe through the PACE/Cullinet
Connection can be combined with department-level information in Wang's PACE
environment for further analysis. The data can also be used in Wang office
automation and decision support applications on VS systems or Wang
Professional Computers.
The PACE/Cullinet Connection will be available from Wang in December.
Depending on the VS system on which it i.s installed, the PACE/Cullinet
Connection software is priced at $5,000, $7,500, or $15,000.

Product Features
The PACE/Cullinet Connection gives VS users direct access to Cullinet's
Integrated Data Management System/Relational (IDMS/R) databases and IBM
Virtual Sequential Access Method (VSAM) files via C/ICMS. In addition, it
allows non-mainframe users to access extracts of VSAM files and of IBM
Information Management Systems '(IMS), IBM Dat a 'Language 1 (DL/1), Cin-com
TOTAL"), and IDMS/R production databases.
The PACE/Cullinet Connection offers easy-to-Use., powerful query
capabilities. End users need not be familiar with the IBM or Cullinet
software environment. To view or retrieve mainframe data, they only need to
know the name of the PACE database that represents the Cullinet Information
Data Base (IDB) catalog or the mainframe, as well as the IDB user
identification and password. IDE is a component of Cullinet's C/ICMS.
The PACE Query menus for requesting mainframe data are the same as for
PACE databases, and the PACE/Cullinet Connection translates the resulting data
into PACE Query answer screens Uses can also join PCE and mainframe
databases in the same query.

Once a query against mainframe data is compete. the PACE/Cullinet
Connection gives LISRis a number of options. Users can format the data into
reports, using the PACE Report facility. If they save the output of the
query, they can convert it into a VS 20/20TH spreadsheet or a Wang OFFICE
message. They can also create a procedure that automatically runs the query
and converts the results into a PACE table, which allows users to take
"snapshots of mainframe data on a regular basis for further processing in
PACE.
Users can also transform the query result into a Wang Word Processing
document, or graph it through the VS Graphics Facility. In.addition, files
can be converted for further processing on a PC via the PC/VS Data Exchange
Utility.
The PACE/Cullinet Connection makes efficient use of mainframe system
resources. PACE Query enables users to select only the records and fields
they require. As a result, downloading of entire files from the IBM mainframe
is unnecessary. The PACE/Cullinet Connection also promotes data security.
Only the data the user needs and has authority to access is sent to the VS.
Four Components
Integration of mainframe and PACE data through the PACE/Cullinet
Connection requires the PACE/Cullinet Connection software, VS 3274 Emulation
Software, and PACE Query on the VS, as well as Cullinet'.s C/ICMS on the
mainframe.
? The PACE/Cullinet Connection software package serves as a bridge between
the PACE Query facility and Cullinet's C/ICMS. Two utilities provided by the
package establish the connections among the VS netwT,-k software, the IBM
systes, and Cullinet's C/IrMS.

A transpo!-t utility stores network software information supplied by the
?systems administrator. This information enables the PACE/Cullinet Connection
to use a communications link automatically every time a user decides to query
a mainframe database. A remote access utility allows the administrator to
define the Ii mainframe connections through a series of menu selections.
Wang's VS 3274 Emulation Software provides the gateway through which the
PACE/Cullinet Connection routes requests for mainframe data.
The PACE :uery facility on the VS allows users to formulate their requests
for PACE data, mainframe data, or a combination of both.
