The TVRO also provided live television coverage of Gorbachev's speech from Murmansk o er, when he toured that city and its naval facilities. + COVERAGE OF IRAN - In response to heightened consumer interest in the Persian Gulf over the weekend, Nicosia Bureau opened two hours early on Sunday morning (4 October) to provide live early morning coverage of Tehran radio. In mounting a watch on the radio, the bureau was able to make effective use of its new satellite monitoring installation (ROSET), which provided much better reception of Tehran than that available from conventional shortwave radio. The ROSET also provides timely coverage of Tehran television broadcasts, which FBIS was previously able to cover only on a delayed basis through F_ I a contractor in Tel Aviv. + EVIDENCE ON MIA WHEREABOUTS - DIA/VOPW, the U.S. Government office responsible for coordinating negotiations with Vietnam for our POWs and MIAs, asked for FBIS' help in obtaining a copy of the 2 July 1969 issue of the Vietnamese newspaper QUAN DOI NHAN DAN. This issue contains a commentary, "Feats of Arms of Vigilant Spirit and Determination to Win," which reported two downed U.S. aircraft by name and which was filed by the then FBIS Saigon Bureau. The pilots remain MIA. In recent negotiations, the FBIS translation was used as evidence that the Vietnamese knew the whereabouts of the aircrafts' occupants; however, the Vietnamese demanded to see the original Vietnamese version before taking further action. A copy was located in FBIS Production Group microfilm files and re- produced on immediate turnaround by P&PD Photography Divi, ginnfor delivery to negotiators for a round of talks this week.
