Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/12/15: CIA-RDP89M00699R001200760018-5 25X1 The Director of Central Intelligence Washington, D.C 20505 Critical Intelligence Problems Committee DCI/ICS 87-3721 3 April 1987 MEMORANDUM FOR: Acting Director of Central Intelligence VIA: Deputy Director, Intelligence Community Staff SUBJECT: CIPC Monthly Report--March 1987 n 1. CIPC Activity The CIPC did not meet in March. However, the Acting Chairman presented the CIPC Study on Intelligence Community Support to SDI to the NFIC for its approval on 12 March. 2. Intelligence Community Support to the Strategic Defense Initiative As you will recall, when the CIPC study was presented at the 12 March 1987 NFIC meeting, it received mixed reviews. Although you explicitly approved several recommendations contained in the study, you also directed that a detailed collection plan in support of the SDIO, including cost data, be developed within 30 days. Subsequently, the D/ICS assigned this project to an interagency task force, chaired by the IC Staff Planning and Policy Staff. A CIPC Staff officer has been assigned to the task force in order to provide continuity with the CIPC effort on SDI 3. As to the fate of the CIPC SDI study and its NFIC approved recommendations, we soon will be recommending to you that the study be published as a CIPC document with introductory note detailing your F__ I implementing instructions. NFIP Support to Limited Military Operations The February 1987 CIPC monthly report was premature in reporting that the CIPC had coordinated on the revised version of the CIPC Study on Limited Military Operations. Since then, Air Force requested more time to coordinate. Mai Gen Bissell apparently wishes to discuss a particular recommendation with the Director, DIA before formally coordinating on the study. However, the situation should be resolved by mid- ril and we will subsequently forward the study to you for NFIC consideration.
