SUBJECT: Intelligence Assessment for The Vice President
Over the last year Vice President Bush has asked us for a number of
updates on the status of rightwing terrorist activity in El Salvador.
As a result, I believe we should draw his attention to this latest DDI
study on the subject. It will bring him up to date on the overall trends,
and remind him that we are following the problem closely.

I would like to draw your attention to the Agency's latest assessment
on rightist violence in El Salvador. I know the problem of controlling
rightwing terrorism in that country has been of particular interest to you
for some time. This study documents the considerable progress that has
been made since your visit to San Salvador in December 1983.
The other, more worrisome side of the story is that rightwing extremist
elements remain capable and probably willing to renew their terrorist
activities as circumstances permit. We will continue to monitor closely
the political tension between the Duarte administration and the rightist
opposition as we suspect events this year may push the levels of violence
upward somewhat. Let me know if you have any specific questions regarding
this assessment or the situation in general.
