STAT
I was delighted to receive your letter last month and
thank you for bringing me up to date on what you have been
doing. I especially appreciated your very kind sentiments
going back to Wright Quad. You may be interested to know
that my debt to the men of Wright Quad and Elliot House is
far greater than anyone can imagine. When the unit
planned a hayride in the spring of 1966, I was in
Washington interviewing with CIA and to meet the
requirement that I have a woman counselor as my date, the
unit arranged a blind date. My date that night has now
been my wife for almost 20 years.
Thanks again for writing. It was good to hear from
you.

Mr. Robert M. Gates
Deputy Director for Intelligence
Central Intelligence Agency
care of Office of Public Affairs
Washington, D.C. 20505
When I picked up the Chronicle of Higher Education last week and saw
the name "Robert M. Gates" and Central Intelligence Agency on the
same page it brought back nearly twenty-year old memories. After
all, how many people have I met, aside from the Wright Quadrangle
(Elliot House) Residence Advisor of 1965-1966, who went by the
name of Robert M. Gates?
I checked with the CIA and they confirmed that you had a degree from
William & Mary AND Indiana University, so you must be the one and
only Bob Gates who lived next to me for the first nine months of
my initial college experiences at Indiana University.
Some of the ideas and study habits I gleaned from you paid off
dearly for me after we all moved from Wright Quad. over to Wilkie
Quad. I stayed at Wilkie for the rest of my undergraduate years at
Indiana. I spent the next two years in married housing while I
was in the MBA Program.
It has been about eight years since I was back at I.U. I believe
that Wright Quad. is now co-ed. The place looks very much the
same as if time had no effect (nor the residents) on the structure.
I have not maintained any relationships with our original crew from
Wright Quad. We scattered upon graduation. Two years ago, my wife
and I looked at the old I.U. yearbooks and had a few hours of
fun remembering the names with the faces, and of course the clothing
styles and haircuts, etc.
Your name and photograph brought back twenty years of now pleasant
memories of my early college experiences. These were life-shaping.
You played a part in this experience. After twenty years,I thought
it should be conveyed to you.

`A STEP FORWARD'
CIA Eases Stand on Research Role;
Scholars Cautiously Welcome Shifts
By ANGUS PAUL
The Central Intelligence Agency has
made changes in its policies that could
result in fewer scholars' having to sub-
mit manuscripts for prepublication re-
view and in more scholars' being able to
acknowledge publicly the agency's role
in their work.

of research that is later independently
published by a scholar unless (1) the

Scholars generally welcomed the
shift but emphasized that it did not elim-
inate potential conflicts between aca-
demic freedom and C.I.A.-supported re-
search.
The revisions constitute "a step for-
ward," John Shattuck, vice-president
