I very much appreciate your interest in a position in the Office of
Policy and Planning. I remember well our occasional meetings at the time
I was on the National Security Council Staff, when you were doing evaluations
of DDO reporting.,
I am sorry to say that there are no positions available in the Office
at this time. The Planning Staff consists of only three professionals, two
of whom were transferred directly from the old EXCOM Staff, and the position
of Chief already has been filled. The Policy Review Staff and the Inter-
departmental Affairs Staff, at this time, each consist of only one profes-
sional, in the former case a transfer from the EXCOM Staff and in the latter
an NFAC professional on rotation. Our problem in both Legislative Liaison
and Public Affairs has been in making significant reductions in those staff
positions and the return of a number of individuals to line positions, primarily
in the DDO and NFAC.
One of the Director's principal objectives in consolidating some of these
functions was to reduce staff and, as a result, only one or two positions were
created for which there were not already incumbents on the then existing EXCOM
Staff or in OLC/OPA. I was directed to keep the Office as lean as possible
while performing the functions.
I go into this in some detail because ycur credentials are very impressive
and I want you to know why I am unable to provide a more positive response.
I certainly will keep the resume you sent me and should a vacancy occur, espe-
cially on the Planning Staff, T certainly will be in touch.
