Proposal for U-2R Airplane
1. Subject proposal was received 18 January 1966 and
deals with an expanded version of the U-2 aircraft with
substantially increased altitude, range and payload/sensor
flexibility.
2. The DD/S&T has requested that a preliminary evalua-
"Lion be made of the proposal in the very near future. I am
requesting that you and appropriaLe members of your staff
review the proposal (attached hereto) and prepare written
comments covering your areas of interest especially in terms
of potential sensor/collect_oa systems, ECM, and vulner-
ability as well as feasibility, weaknesses apparent, and
recommended changes. I ask that your comments be submitted
to me on 27 January 1966. 1 realize that this timing
necessitates the use of estimate= based upon experience and
tools at hand and, therefore, your comments will be inter-
preted in the framework of a preliminary evaluation.
3. In order that I may provide as much help as possible
in formulating your comments, I request you or your repre-
sentative attend a meeting in the Control Center of OSA on
24 January 1966 at 1100 hours.
