Island for about 45 minutes. It provided photographic coverage
of 10 COMOR targets.
Mission C475C, flown on 26 August 1965, was over southeast
and east China for about 2 hours and 47 minutes. It provided photo-

Preliminary Report
U-2 RECONNAISSANCE MISSIONS C465C, C475C, and C485C
flown 25 and 26 August and 5 September 1965
BACKGROUND
Mission C465C was flown on 25 August 1965 in response 25X1
to COMOR requirements for high resolution photographic coverage
of Hainan Island. Taking off at 0108Z, the U-2 was over denied ter-
ritory for approximately 45 minutes, returning to base at 0620Z.
The pilot reported the weather to be better than the forecast Cate-
gory II (scattered) and variable Category III (broken) cloud coverage.
There were no reported deviations from the planned route.
C475C, a Formosa Strait mission, was flown on 26 August 1965
to satisfy priority re uirements
arising from a temporary
25X1
reduction of
capabilities.
Several COMOR targets were
25X1
also covered by the mission.
Taking off at 0036Z, the U-2 crossed the coast of the Chinese
mainland south of Hong Kong, then flew north to Hangchow and
exited China east of Wenchow after 2 hours and 47 minutes over
denied territory. The pilot reported the weather as better than the
forecast Category II (scattered) and variable III (broken) cloud
coverage. No deviations from the planned route were reported.
Mission C485C was flown over North Vietnam and south China on
5 September 1965. Launched from Taiwan at 01142, the U-2 25X1
penetrated North Vietnam near the Sino-Vietnamese border and over-
flew denied territory for 1 hour and 55 minutes. The mission aircraft
was recovered at Ban Takhl.i, Thailand, at 0745Z for a total flight
time of 6 hours and 31 minutes. In addition to the "B" camera, the
U-2 carried collection Systems III (Comint) and VI (Elint).

TOP SECRET
The weather for mission C485C was forecast as Category III
(broken clouds), based upon the clearing effects of the predicted
movement of Typhoon "Rose. " The expected movement was slow
in developing, however, and the actual weather encountered was
principally Category IV (overcast). The pilot reported the mis-
sion was flown as planned.
All three missions were flown by Chinese Nationalist Air
Force pilots from Taiwan.
