Summary of Coverage
Mission B 4125., flown 9 July 1959, covered an area, within the
Soviet Union lying along the 6th Meridian from the Aral Sea. northward
to near. the 59th Parallel, Aside from a, small portion near the Aral
Sea. this area has not been covered by ea.-slier TALENT System photography.
It includes a large part of the great Trans-Ural industrial developments
the cities of Chelyabinsk, Magnitogorsk., Orsk, and Sverdlovsk, growth
around Verkhniy Ufaley, Nizhniy Tagil, and the Verkhnyaya and Nizhr~yaya
Saldy, and the nuclear energy establishments at Nizhnyaya Tura, Kyshtym,
and Verkhne Neyvinskiy.
Surface-to-air missile launching sites of a type not reported in
earlier missions have been identified at 19 different locations . Most of
these a:re still under construction, A total of 53 airfields and landing
grounds are reported; of these at least 12 a,re of m.a~or importanr.e.
and the Guided Missile
Launch Areas near Tyura Tam, east of the Aral Sea. Both of these
installations were covered in 1957 photography, In addition, the Nukus
area sogth of the Aral Sea in Uzbekistan and Turkmenia was covered, and
the Mary area in southern Turkmenia.
Besides traversing Turkmenia a,nd Uzbekistan, this mission crossed.
the Aktyubinsk and Kzyl Order Oblasts of Kazakhstan, and covered portions
of eastern Chkalov Oblast, the eastern border of Bashkiria,, and Sverdlovsk
and Chelyabinsk Oblasts, a.ll in the Russian Federated Republic. These
administrative divisions embrace a wide range of terrain types, from
desert and .steppe country to marshy lowland and forested mountain.land.
There. is much new road and railroad construction, new buildings and
industries, even new towns . Mining of many differ. ent types , quarrying,
lumbering,. and the related processing activities are also conspicuous parts
of the general regional growth. Many of the maps of this part of the Soviet
Union are in need of complete revision.
