7the 1983 g~cain harvest in Afghanistan was good in imst areas,

where the harvest was delayed and the crop was poor. Zhe 1983 wheat harvest,
the ~imary grain crop and staple of Afghanistan, is estimated at
approximately 3 million metric tons, sufficient to supply the rural population
and to support 'the insurgent forces. Urban areas are experiencing some food
shortar3es, largely due to the breakdown in the transportation and distribution
system, necessitesting the continued importation of substantial amounts of
