significantly impacted on FBIS operations in 1985. Our responses
are keyed to the considerations enumerated in your request.

+Monitoring of satellite-transmitted public media, including

Chile, and Peru, all heretofore unavailable to FBIS

FBIS provided:
+Overnight language assistance to translate into English
"Achille Lauro" design documents in French, Italian, and Japanese
B. Consumer needs for intelligence on continuing problems and
new issues.
FBIS provided:
+Live coverage of Italian television via the Headquarters
satellite dish during the "Achille Lauro" hijacking and
extensive media coverage of countries involved
+Vice President Bush and Secretary Shultz with a roundup of
worldwide official reaction to the TWA hijacking
D. Support for operational forces.
FBIS provided:
+24-hour coverage of Mideast radios for information on
critical developments in the TWA hijacking incident
8. Mexican Economy
B. Consumer needs for intelligence on continuing problems and
new issues.
FBIS provided:
+Treasury Department and IC consumers with text of President de
la Madrid's state of the nation speech from Mexican television
via satellite, the first time FBIS has been able to monitor the
annual economic speech in real time

earthquake to Southern Command Staff officers, who were
investigating possible disaster relief assistance
9. Technology Transfer
A. People.
FBIS provided:
+Additional resources for an S$T center to centralize
exploitation of open source S&T literature. FBIS is continuing
to recruit linguists with scientific and technological
backgrounds to staff the center.
B. Consumer needs for intelligence on continuing problems and
new issues.
FBIS provided:
+Translation of the White Paper "Soviet Acquisition of
Militarily Significant Western Technology: An Update" into
eight foreign languages and roundup of foreign reaction to the
document for Agency officials
E. Explosion of collected data.
FBIS provided:
+Greater access to foreign commercial data bases through
newly-established S$T units in Antwerp and Milan and continued
expansion of operations at its S$T unit in Japan
10. Geneva Summit
B. Consumer needs for intelligence on continuing problems and
new issues.
