FIELD COVERAGE SCHEDULE
This report lists the electronic and printed media which
the Operations Group of the Foreign Broadcast Information Ser-
vice maintains on scheduled coverage. It includes also that
coverage by the British Broadcasting Corporation and by
which complements FBIS coverage.
The schedule groups listings by country of origin and
sourceline. Multiple sourcelines head any coverage to which
two or more sourcelines are applicable, with the principal
sourceline entered first. Those broadcasts, press agency
transmissions, and publications which do not announce their
true countries of origin appear in the "Clandestine" section.
The sourcelines under each country appear in the follow-
ing order:
international broadcasts from the chief broadcasting
city and then from other cities in alphabetical order
domestic radio and television broadcasts from the chief
broadcasting city and then from other cities in alphabeti-
cal order
international presscasts
domestic presscasts from the principal commercial cen-
ter and then from other cities in alphabetical order
publications from the national capital and then from
other cities in alphabetical order.
Within these groups official transmissions precede semi-
official and private ones, national services precede regional
services, and network broadcasts precede local separations.
Otherwise, sourcelines for electronic coverage appear in alpha-
betical order of language whenever the principal difference
among them is the language. Publications from any given city
appear in alphabetical order of their masthead titles, definite
articles included.
CONTENT OF THE COLUMNS
This schedule expresses the TIMES for electronic coverage
in Greenwich Mean Time (EST + 5 hours or EDT + 4 hours) and
shows the nominal starting time and the ending time for each
item of coverage. "0000 stands for the first moment of the
GMT day and "2400" the last moment. When a cast does not
adhere to a fixed schedule, the listing shows the nominal
starting time followed by an ending time chosen to show the
usual duration of the cast. The bureaus sustain intercept and
recording as long as is necessary to monitor the entire cast.
Listings of broadcasts under each sourceline start with the
earliest coverage of the local broadcast day; those for pre;STAT
transmissions start with the casts having the lowest item num-
bers.
The listings show the DAYS OF COVERAGE by the use of ini-
tials of the days of the week, with certain exceptions. The
word "daily" stands for coverage expected every day. The word
"note" indicates a complex. schedule which is explained in the
NOTES column and the abbreviation "irreg" denotes coverage on a
random basis. When the coverage is backstop or conditional the
DAYS OF COVERAGE are irregular.

A listing of two of these digraphs indicates interception
of the coverage at the first facility and processing at the
second. Mon i to rab i I i ty is as reported by the second facility.
The CLASS OF COVERAGE specifies the relative importance
of each item of coverage, the immediacy with which the bureaus
process it, and its special uses. These classifications are
indicative of normal operations only: during a crisis each
bureau monitors whatever it must to get the job done.

Class A denotes those transmissions and publications
which comprise the core coverage of the monitoring operation.
Bureaus monitor class A electronic coverage live and class A
publications immediately upon receipt. [his class comprises
the most important newscasts, press reviews, and commentary
programs on radio or television, the most productive press
agency transmissions, and major publications. Each bureau is
responsible for arranging backups, wherever possible, so that
other bureaus are prepared to take over its Class A coverage
when it is unable to maintain coverage for any reason. No
broadcast coverage recorded by timer or press agency coverage
printed unattended may be designated class A. Bureaus desig-
nate coverage as class A or discontinue class A coverage only
with the concurrence of the Chief, Monitoring Operations Divi-
sion.
Class B applies to other regular coverage processed nor-
mally within 24 hours of receipt, but which need riot be covered
in an emergency. This coverage produces a substantial volume
of publishable wordage.
Class C coverage produces a limited volume of publishable
wordage and may be dropped when bureau operations or staff
shortages regire.
Class D is special watch coverage producing a limited
volume of important or unique material onpriority intelligence
targets, primarily the USSR and China. Bureaus should process
class D coverage within 24 hours.
Class E is monitored primarily for reports on economics
or business.
Class J is taken primarily for use in the publications of
the Production Group.
Class L is monitored primarily to serve lateral recei-
pients.
Class V is monitored principally for the production of
video selection lists.
Class W is watch or cruising functions, including the
coverage of program previews or program magazines.
Class Z is backstop coverage taken only when other cover-
age -- usually class A or B -- is unmonitorable or missed.
Every listing in this class must relate to another listing from
the same source country, whether at the same bureau or at
another: radio and television broadcasts may backstop other
broadcasts, presscasts may backstop presscasts, and
publications may backstop publications.
Class X is any which cannot be assigned to one of the
preceding classes.
The MODE, shown by a trigraph, is the medium in which the
coverage appears:
VBC -- voice broadcast monitored entirely from ampli-
tude modulation mediumwave or shortwave stations
VIM -- voice broadcast monitored all or part of the
time from a frequency modulation station
VLW -- voice broadcast monitored all or part of the
time from a longwave station
SBC -- voice broadcast material monitored from an earth
satellite
TVB -- television broadcast
TAO -- television broadcast, audio component only
STV -- television broadcast material monitored from an
ea rth sato Iito
FON -- other radiotelephony
MOR -- Morse transmission
FAX -- facsimile transmission, including radiophoto but
excluding hellschreiber
SFX -- facsimile monitored from an earth satellite
HEL -- hellschreiber transmission
RTT -- simplex radioteletype transmission
TEX -- teletext
TPX -- twinplex transmission with no submultiplexing
TTD -- twinplex transmission with time-division submul-
tiplexing
FMX -- frequency-division multiplex transmission, not
including TDM

SRT -- radioteletype monitored from an earth satellite
OPX -- radio telegraphy
WSS -- wire service subscription received by landline
PUB -- a newspaper, magazine, journal, or handout
XXX -- other
The INDEX OF INPUT shows the average number of minutes
per week (electronic) or.issues per week (publications) of reg-
ular coverage available to FBIS. The index value is "0" or
"(1.00" for a l l backstop coverage and for a l l coverage taken
irregularly or conditionally.
The USUAL MONITORABILITY (electronic coverage only) has
four permissible values: "good" (all words monitorable)
"fair" (occasional words and phrases unmonitorable, "poor?'
(inter;mittently monitorable but unsuitable for texting), or
fummn (unmonitorable, no processing possible).
The LAG (publications coverage only) expresses the aver-
age number of days between the nominal date of publication and
the receipt of that publication at the monitorng facility.
The NOTES include the type of program and may also
include the name of the program, the transmission service in
which it apears, the target, irregularities of scheduling, the
nature of a publication, etc.
