1. (S/D) SIGNIFICANCE: FIRST LAUNCH OF A CATAMARAN-HULLED VESSEL
OF INDIGENOUS DESIGN, POSSIBLY FOR USE AS A COMMAND SHIP OR
ARMED AUXILIARY.
2. (S/D) REMARKS: THE NAJ-A, A CATAMARAN-HULLED VESSEL, POSSIBLY
A COMMAND SHIP OR ARMED AUXILIARY HAS BEEN LAUNCHED FROM THE
INCLINED BUILDING WAY SINCE IT IS
MEDITERRANEAN MOORED TO THE QUAY. THE VESSEL IS APPROXIMATELY
72 METERS LONG WITH A BEAM OF APPROXIMATELY 17 METERS AND HAS
AN OPEN DECK FORWARD OF THE SUPERSTRUCTURE WITH A RAISED DECK,
PROBABLY A HELICOPTER LANDING AREA, AFT. THE VESSEL IS
EQUIPPED WITH FOUR SS-N-2 (STYX) ANTISHIP CRUISE MISSILE
LAUNCHERS FORWARD, TWO ON THE PORT AND TWO ON THE STARBOARD
SIDE. THE LAUNCH RAILS FOR THE STYX LAUNCHERS WERE PROBABLY
INSTALLED DURING MARCH AND APRIL 1981. THE VESSEL WAS FIRST
OBSERVED UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN AUGUST 1980.
