MEMORANDUM FOR: Deli Ated Agcy Safety and Health Officials
SUBJECT: Trairiiz(g Courses with Certification Points
The Occupational Safety and Health Act, Section 19, requires
agencies to establish and maintain an effective and compre-
hensive occupational safety and health program. Executive
Order 12196 Section 1-201(g) requires that the head of each
agency shall assure that periodic inspections of all agency
workplaces are performed by personnel with equipment and
competence to recognize hazards.
To assist agencies in fulfilling their occupational safety
and health responsibilities the OSHA Training institute
offers a wide variety of safety and health training courses.
Among these are a number of courses which have been awarded
certification maintenance points by the American Board of
Industrial Hygiene.
The attached list of courses with certification points should
be widely circulated to all occupational safety specialists
and industrial hygienists within your agency.
Should you need additional information please contact Tony
Towey, Chief, Division of Training and Educational Develop-
ment by calling FTS 353-2500 or (312) 297-4810.

CM points will also be awarded for abbreviated versions of the
above courses. For example, the Respirator Training course is two
weeks when given in residence, but one week when offered off-site.
One-half of the CM points given the residence course would be
awarded. Shorter off-site courses (i.e., less than one week) will
be awarded certification maintenance points on an individual basis
through ABIH.
Since certified industrial hygienists are required to maintain
certification through a series of point gathering activities, it
is requested that you assist to advise those certified industrial
hygienists in other Federal Agencies of this source of continuing
education for maintentance of their certification.
Any questions concerning this matter may be directed to Tony
Towey, Chief, Division of Training and Educational Development by
calling FTS 353-2500 or (312) 297-4810.
