Casey to attend the black tie dinner at the Eliot House at Harvard University on May 10th. Mr. Casey has asked me to convey his regrets. Due to a change in the Director's schedule, he must decline the honor. Sincerely, George V. Lauder Director, Public Affairs Office SUBJECT: Invitation to Attend a Dinner at Harvard University 1. Action Requested: Accept or decline an invitation to attend a dinner at the Eliot House, Harvard University, in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Saturday, 10 May. Cocktails will begin at 7:00 p.m. and black tie dinner at 8:30 p.m. 2. Background: Mr. John Calloway, a second year student at the Harvard Law cool, has invited you and Mrs. Casey to attend a dinner for approximately 40 guests which would include representatives from the different professional schools at Harvard, Senior Fellows, Junior Fellows, leading industrialists, government officials, and approximately 20 of the most talented undergraduate students from the University. An ad hoc committee from the University put the meeting together as an opportunity for talented undergraduate students to meet with distinguished academicians, industrialists, and senior government officials. Mr. Calloway said that the students are from prominent families and are interested in CIA. According to Mr. Calloway, this is the first time a dinner meeting of this nature has been attempted and no one will be called upon to make any speeches. The University thought it was a novel idea worth trying. President and Mrs.. Derek C. Bok, Harvard Business School Professor George Cabot Lodge, International Law Professor Arthur Van Mehren, Republican Party Chief Council Roger Allen Moore, MIT Nobel Laureate Franco Modigliani, and Fiat President Gianni Agnelli will be present. Paul Mellon and Katherine Graham may attend. Those who have declined the invitation are Caspar Weinberger, David Rockefeller and Ed Meese. Recommendation: None. Mr. Calloway is an imaginative young man to put this meeting together with such a prestigious group. Due to the homosexual issue, however, CIA's relationship has not been the best with Harvard Law School. Although the dinner is not primarily for the law school, this problem could arise during discussion. As you are aware, you are accepting an honorary degree from Long Island University on Sunday, May 11th; hence, an additional event would make a tight schedule. Please indicate your preference below and Public Affairs will make the appropriate response. George V. Box 1722 Cambridge, Massachusetts 02238 Mr. William Casey Director Central Intelligence Agency Washington, D.C. 20505 Dear Mr. Casey, Greetings from the Harvard Law School! I would like to take this opportunity to extend to you an invitation to a black tie dinner at Harvard's Society of Fellows on Saturday, May 10. Cocktails will begin at 7:00 pm and dinner at 8:30. The dinner party will consist of about forty guests including various Harvard officials and professors such as the President and Mrs. Derek C. Bok, MIT Nobel Laureate Franco Modigliani, various captains of industry, and about thirty Harvard upperclassmen. Although no one will be called upon to make any speeches, it is to be hoped that the evening will provide for a pleasant environment in which to chat with Harvard students who share mutual interests with distinguished guests such as your- selves. With these sentiments in mind, it would indeed be an honor to be able to include you as a guest.
