Uci 24 May 84 Angola - We are within an inch of a three-party agreement to form a coalition government. - A Marxist group broke away, began receiving Soviet weapons and 50 Cubans joined up with them. - The other two groups formed an alliance and sought help. - By the fall, 11,000 Cuban troops, supported by Soviet military assistance of over $150 million, came into Angola. Cuban troop strength shot up to 30,000; the Soviet military assistance grew from 64 million in 1976 to 143 million in 1978 and now there are 561 million there. - This is what we expect in Nicaragua.
