MEMORANDUM FOR:
FROM:
SUBJECT: Worldwide Briefing
I would like the following visuals:
1. Map running from Baghdad to Islamabad, and from the northern border
of Iran to the Straits of Hormuz, including Saudi oil fields and Baluchistan
harbor, showing Soviet forces on northern border of Iran, attack routes
through the mountains, forces down to Iranian and Saudi oil fields, forces
deployed on Iraq/Iran border, air fields in western Afghanistan, communication
routes in Russian-held territory in Afghanistan. We will have to determine
whether this needs three maps or whether it could all be reflected on one map.
2. Map showing forces on Soviet/Chinese border and on Vietnam/Kampuchea/
Thailand border. Again, this may take two maps to be meaningful.
3. Southern Africa showing Southern Africans deployed in Namibia,
Savimbi land as attached, pipeline from Mozambique to Zimbabwe, South African
strikes into Zimbabwe.
4. North Africa with Libyan arms stockpiles, area threatened in Northern
Chad, Polisario and Moroccan position in Western Sahara. We would want to show
Benin and Central African Republic as a base for incursions into Southern Chad.
5. Map of the Horn of Africa showing South Yemen and North Yemen and
insurgent-held territory in North Yemen, contested areas in Ethiopia, Cuban
locations and activity in the Ogaden area.
