Approved For Release 2005/01/12 : CIA-RDP88-01315R0004002Op016-2 ,\L\V YORK DAILY NEWS MAY 2 3 1966 'PEN -Literary Greats f loo Gather Here June 12' The world's literary greats will gather here from June 12 to 18 at the 34th International PEN Congress, the first such session to be held in the United States in 42 years. Among the literary no- tables expected to attend will be Guenter Grass, Graham Greene, Ignazio Silone, Pablo Neruda and Murial- Spark. Host will be Lewis Galentiere, president of the PEN American Center. PEN is a world associa- tion of poets, playwrights, essay- ists, editors and novelists in 66 countries. "Exciting and gratifying as it will be to welcome these literary greats," Galentiere said, "what is ultimately more important for America is that the majority of writers from Europe, Asia, Af- rica and Latin America will be getting their initial first-hand im pressions of the United States., And it is these writers who often establish the moral climate andl shape the opinion in their owij countries." Miller to Speak Arthur Miller, president of PEN International, will address the session on June 13 at the Loeb Student Center at New York Uni- versity where the week-long series of discussions will be held. The theme of the congress, "The Writer as Independent Spirit," will be reviewed at four round- table sessions during the week. Other among the 150 delegates expected are Edward Albee, Saul Bellow, Norman Cousins, Leon Edel, Ralph Ellison, N o r m a n Mailer and William L. Shirer.
