Pen officials warned the Russians earlier this year that they would face a barrage of criticism over the imprisoning of two writers in Moscow in '1"February if they attended. They had also indicated to the Soviet Writers' Union that Pen would probably refuse to accept them as members at the present time because of the trial and sentence of the two writers. Andrei Sinyavsky, a prom- inent literary critic, was sen- tenced to seven years hard la- bor, and Yuli Dnaiel, a poet- translator, five years, for slan- dering the Soviet.
