MEMORANDUM FOR: Deputy Director of Central Intelligence
FROM : Herbert E. Hetu
Assistant to the Director (Public Affairs)
SUBJECT : "Shade of the Palms"
1. We attempted to obtain a copy of Shade of the Palms so
I could look it over before making comments on Mr. inberg s
letter. We have checked numbrous bookstores, libraries, and
distributors for this book and any others by the same author
with no success. The attached description of HARLEQUIN (the
reported publisher) from the WRITERS MARKET will give some
indication of the types of books they publish, i.e., "romatic
fiction."
2. Frankly the idea leaves me pretty cold. It has all
the earmarks of a 8- film complete with dark glasses and trench-
coats. However, I have had a bit of motion picture experience
and can speak Hollywood. I would be happy to meet with Charlie
Elkins on a non-committal basis to satisfy Elmer Linberg and
Bob (?). I have done nothing toward checking out Elkins credentials
as a film producer, 66c. but can on a quiet basis if you wish.
3. 1 am ready to move in any direction.
Herbert E. Hetu
