11 November 1976
I met with Samuel P. Reed, President, Engelhard
Hanovia, Inc., and Alvin Josephy, Jr., Editor in Chief/
Magazines for Engelhard Hanovia, Inc., on 3 November in
New York, concerning their interests to publish some
articles on American intelligence.
Mr. Josephy, acting as spokesman, described their interest$
in commissioning a historian/writer to do one or possibl,
more articles giving some historical perspective to the
development of American intelligence service. American
Herita e is mindful of the legitimate concern t amt the CIA
wove for the protection of sensitive information, but
they are interested in selecting a case study, as it were,
to illustrate and add interest to the article. For our
part, I expressed both our appreciation for their under-
standing of the sensitivities involved and our willingness
to be of assistance in serious research for the purpose of
producing a serious piece of writing on an important
subject.
We agreed that the subject of intelligence contribution
to the handling of the Cuban missile crisis in 1962 would
be appropriate, particularly since the history of the
intelligence work on that occasion has not really been
written in any meaningful fashion.
We discussed also some other areas of their possible
interest, such as an article on secrecy in a democratic
society. They are in principle very interested in
pursuing the entire area of American intelligence at some
length, but we agreed that we would concentrate for the time
being on the first article which would give the perspective
of the development of the contemporary intelligence
community, using the missile crisis as the principal
illustration.

I told Messrs. Reed and Josephy that I would be in
touch with them as soon as I am able to present to them
more concretely our capacity for assistance in this
project.
