Approved For Release 2008/08/21 : CIA-RDP88-01070R000201210010-3 CBS EVENING`NEWS 24 May 1981 EL SALVADOR/ JONES: In Washington, the timing of the news from El U.S. AID Salvador was perfect, coming as the House was about to vote on $62 million in emergency military aid for El Salvador. It passed easily, with some members taking credit for the trial. (Graphic: Yes, 267; no, 147) REP.\MICHAEL\BARNES (D-Md.): That trial never would have taken place had it not been for the pressures that were brought by the Congress of the United States... JONES: But when it came to the question of continued funding for rebels who are fighting the Sandinista government in Nicaragua, the House was more divided today. REP.\EDWARD\BOLAND (D-Mass.): We simply must not appropriate one more penny to wage a war that has caused our allies to wonder at our sense of proportion that has turned Central America into an armed camp. REP.\ROBERT\MICHEL (minority leader): What kind of moral foreign policy is it that suddenly cuts off aid to those we have urged to fight tyranny? JONES: The House defeated the covert funds, but the Senate has insisted on some money, so compromise negotiations will continue. (Graphic: stop covert aid--yes, 241; no, 177) Today's vote was a definite message that a majority in the House wants an end to the covert war in Nicaragua, but it was a good'day for El Salvador, $62 million more plus $20 million that was on hold to force El Salvador to prosecute those who had murdered the four American nuns. Phil Jones, CBS News, Capitol Hill. Approved For Release 2008/08/21 : CIA-RDP88-01070R000201210010-3
