NICARAGUA/ RATHER: There was a brief but heavy gunfight today
FIGHTING between Costa Rican and Nicaraguan forces at a border
outpost. It was near an area where a Costa Rican-based,
CIA-backed, anti-Sandinista rebel group is based. This
was the third shooting incident between the two countries
in the past five days. Since Costa Rica has no standing
army, there were concerns that that country might ask the
United States for military assistance if the fighting
worsens.
GUATEMALA/CIA RATHER: The CIA's controversial role in Central America
OPERATION has been focused, up to now, on Nicaragua. But
intelligence sources tell Pentagon correspondent. David
Martin now that the CIA has begun working secretly with
Guatemala. The mission: cut off arms shipments passing
through Guatemala on route to leftist rebels in El
Salvador. Martin also has learned that the CIA is
preparing a similar operation in Belize, through which
Cuban arms shipments are believed to pass on their way to.
El Salvador.
