It was near an area where a Costa Rican-based, CIA-backed, anti-Sandinista rebel group is based. This was the third shooting incident between the two countries in the past five days. Since Costa Rica has no standing army, there were concerns that that country might ask the United States for military assistance if the fighting worsens. GUATEMALA/CIA RATHER: The CIA's controversial role in Central America OPERATION has been focused, up to now, on Nicaragua. But intelligence sources tell Pentagon correspondent. David Martin now that the CIA has begun working secretly with Guatemala. The mission: cut off arms shipments passing through Guatemala on route to leftist rebels in El Salvador.
