"The national security of all the Americas is at
stake in Central America. If we cannot defend
ourselves there, we cannot expect to prevail else-
where. Our credibility would collapse, our al-
liances would crumble and the safety of our home-
land would be put in jeopardy."-President Rea-
gan, addressing a joint session of Congress in
April.
A primer on conflict in Central America--and Its
implications for the U.S.
The report (which was still In production at
press Itine) focuses mainly on Nicaragua, where,
says producer Bob Rogers, the Sandinistas have
"consolidated power and alienated significant por-
tion of the population." Moreover, Nicaragua has
funneled Soviet arms to leftist guerrillas In El Sal-
vador, prompting the U.S. to respond in kind by
supporting anti-Sandinist rebels In Nicaragua.
And in Honduras, a nation bordering both El
Salvador and Nicaragua, the Reagan Administra-
tion is trying to build "a military bastion ass coun-
terbalance to the Sandinist Marxists," according
to.Rogers. The report also examines the mili-
tary situation in (and U.S. aid to) beleaguered
El Salvador.
