SUBJECT Stone/Russian Troops in Cuba
NEWSCASTER: Despite a week filled with diplomatic
squabbles, Nicaraguan officials say they're glad that
special US envoy Richard Stone is visiting their country
today.
Stone will meet with leaders of the leftist govern-
ment as part of his effort to bring peace to the troubled
region.
There could be as many as 1800 new Soviet troops in
Cuba but US intelligence officials aren't sure what they
might be doing on the island. There's speculation they
could be replacing or reinforcing existing forces.
