1. I am forwarding the attached collection guidance from the DDI's Office
of European Analysis, which has begun assessing West European interests and
capabilities in the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) research and develop-
ment field. As part of the assessment, analysts need to know how the West
Europeans might respond to possible US overtures for a joint research program
and what technologies they might contribute should they choose to participate.
Information is specifically requested on France, West Germany, Italy, and
the United Kingdom as so possible to help begin drafting a research
paper in February 1985. 7
