FOREIGN BROADCAST INFORMATION SERVICE
Of Special Interest This Week
+ Differing treatment of Chernenko in two editions of the Soviet
military newspaper RED STAR on 15 January, noted in the FBIS Daily
Report, was a key piece of evidence used in an article in the President's
Daily Brief on Chernenko's physical and political health. An editorial
in the First Edition effusively praised Chernenko. In the Second
Edition, the accolade was deleted and a reference to "other party and
state leaders" added. This editorial doctoring, along with evidence from
other sources, was seen as indicating that Chernenko's political position
was weakening. Monitoring of satellite facsimile transmissions of RED
STAR enabled FBIS to distribute the information to analysts the same day.
+ The PDB Staff reported that copies of an article on the
Shultz-Gromyko talks published in the FBIS TRENDS had been distributed
to General Vessey, arms control specialist and-aide-Ito Secretary Shultz
Bob Clark, and to Secretary Shultz himself.
+ The cover-to-cover translation of the Soviet journal KOM(MJNIST is
now being done by a JPRS Independent Contractor on diskette, received at
JPRS via modem. On an experimental basis, with the help of the DI's
Analyst Support Group, softcopy versions of these translations are being
transferred into the VM/AIM system where they will be available for
search by analysts.
+ FBIS received a request from the PFIAB staff, on behalf of
Eugene Rostow, to locate a Soviet press commentary mentioned in a
Washington Post article dealing with the impact of nuclear weapons on
Soviet policy. A copy of the commentary, which had been translated by
FBIS and published in the 13 June 1984 Daily Report, was sent to the
PFIAB.
+ According to the Latin America Chief in the Strategic
Intelligence Office, Drug Enforcement Administration, mention has been
made at two recent interagency meetings on narcotics issues, including an
NIO Warning Meeting, of the important contribution being made by FBIS
Foreign Press Notes, particularly those on narcotics in Latin America.
As a result-he has requested a meeting between FBIS officers and chiefs
of DEA regional units.
