SUBJECT Monthly Report - Austria Bureau - January 1987
Austrian Bureau's Local Are twork was further enhanced early
in the month when ADD Deputy Chief led a four-man ADD/LEC
team to the bureau to install 10 a itional workstations on the LAN.
These new units increased the number pc's on the LAN to 26,
providing the editors with their own workstations and ensuring
at least one computer for each monitorial unit. This in turn set
the scene for the arrival of another team led by later
in the month, composed of representatives from E and LEC
and entrusted with conducting a soft-copy edit experiment at
the bureau.
A. Monitorial/Editorial

bureau s ssian Section -- went smoothly. has assumed
all chief monitorial duties and has kept the bureau ctioning
in its accustomed, proficient manner.
2. The traditional New Year's celebrations and vacations
throughout Eastern Europe resulted in a drop of over 250,000 words
in the bureau's total filed output in comparison with December,
from 856,800 to 594,110 words.
3. The drop in total wordage may have accounted for the high
percentage of bureau output processed on the LAN, surpassing all
previous figures and accounting for 50.13 percent of total output.
In terms of actual numbers, filed wordage processed using the LAN
came to 309,410 words, punched wordage to 307,800. With the addition
of 10 additional workstations on the LAN in mid month, February's
percentages should be even higher.

B. Communications
1. The installation of the modems necessary for the new 300 baud
circuit and the activation of the line between the bureau and embassy
CPU was completed 29 January. The missing link remains the line to
Croughton, either the Embassy-Bonn-Croughton link or the Embassy-
Croughton direct line. The latest word is that the strike by
British PTT has delayed until further notice the testing of the
British leg of both circuits to Croughton.
C. Lateral Services
1. As a result of its annual survey of local lateral services,
the Chilean Embassy was deleted as a recipient of the BBC Monitoring
Report (Local AU2).
