During all my research for this article I kept thinking of how great this machine would be for secret courier work. I wrote Senator Barry Goldwater and asked him to give me the name of someone at the CIA. He answered that he had heard of the AUTOCOM and suggested I write you directly. The AUTOCOM is not a computer but a new briefcase-size machine that can transmit and receive printed matter over cellular lines as well as regular lines, and has up to 16 built-in programs that can give immediate access to data banks, any make of computer, has a "Time" feature to transmit and receive information while unattended, a bar-code option and a credit card security option. The enclosed copy is to be used in AUTOCOM literature and gives more particulars. My feature article on the AUTOCOM is published in the October "PICO" magazine. If your department would like to talk to someone at AUTCOM for more information, contact William Maeser or Ward Maeser at AUTOCOM Leasing & Manufacturing, Inc. in Phoenix, AZ. at (602) 437-0701. I hope this information will be of use to you. I realize the CIA has very advanced equipment but the possibilities for this machine in assembling confidential data seemed too tremendous for me to not notify you. Approved For Release 2009/09/21 CIA-RDP87M00539R002804720044-8 'IRS'T MARKETED MACHINE TO SEND AND RECEIVE PRINTED DATA OVER CELLULAR PHONES SIMPLE - NO TRAINING REQUIRED AUTOCOM is the answer for people who are too busy to spend time training for a new technology. After you press a key to access a built-in program, AUTCOM asks questions on the two-line LCD 40 column screen and you answer on the standard full size alpha and numeric keyboard. The clear, concise manual consists of seven typewritten pages. CUSTOMIZED- UP TO 16 BUILT-IN PROGRAMS Pre-programmed for individual needs, 64k of RAM storage with one-key access to data banks or any computer. Built in modem and automatic dialing of wanted access numbers. Works on rotary or touch-tone phones. Any program change can be made later, on line, from a distance. IMPACT PRINTER Quality built-in impact printer with tractor and friction feed can also take a company's standard printed forms and the fourth copy will be as sharp as the original. BUILT-IN BATTERY Built-in battery with 115v charger should last indefinitely. In the rare event of a weak battery, AUTOCOM warns you and shuts off, reserving power to hold your stored data. At this point you have to plug into 115v to print the filed data. DATA NOT LOST "FILED" data is not lost when you turn the AUTOCOM "off". You can set it on a shelf for months and the data will be there next time you turn AUTOCOM "on". SECURITY FEATURES If an AUTOCOM is reported stolen, the thief cannot access your office computer to gain confidential information. The computer will recognize this machine as being stolen and "zap" or empty the AUTOCOM of any stored data before cutting the machine off. An optional "credit card reader" is also available to prevent unauthorized people from using the machine. For couriers, machine could be carried with no filed data and data accessed on arrival at destination. TIME FUNCTION Built-in calendar and clock is a great working tool for business travelers. While left unattended, "Time Function" can dial the numbers and transmit data to a computer in a different time zone. AUTOCOM accepts data while you are out and tells you "Message Waiting" when you return. The built-in fan keeps the machine from getting 'hot' when left unattended. REMOTE MANAGER An executive can easily, with one-key operation, tap into the company computer to stay informed on current business. And he can do this from his office, his home or the deck of his yacht if he's so inclined. LIGHTWEIGHT - ONLY 12 POUNDS ONE-KEY OPERATION- ACCESS DATA BANKS BUILT-IN IMPACT PRINTER CELLULAR POWER_ OPTION Printed data is instantly transmitted or received over cellular phone. At the present time, we recommend this not be done faster than 300 baud for cellular clarity. The built-in printer accepts different signals as control codes for different type fonts but this feature can be turned off so it will not accept static as another control code thus virtually eliminating possible static problems. CELLULAR BRIDGE/SPAN OPTION A cellular bridge/span option for transmitting integrity. The bridge/span connection maintains a constant tone and provides a memory buffer for any interruption. 115V- BATTERY - CELLULAR UP TO 16 BUILT-IN PROGRAMS NETWORK COMPUTERS BUILT-IN MODEM Approved For Release 2009/09/21: CIA-RDP87M00539R002804720044-8 Approved For Release 2009/09/21: CIA-RDP87M00539R002804720044-8 BAR CODE "PEN" OPTION THIS OPTION SPEEDS TRANSMISSION OF DATA AND ELIMINATES COSTLY, TIME-CONSUMING, ERROR-RIDDEN DATA DUPLICATION. It includes a bar code "pen" with a well on the left side of the AUTOCOM where the "pen" is inserted to enter data. The bar code "pen" is a remote, battery operated pen, a miniature computer that holds 2,000 characters of information. Thousands of business operations will be greatly improved with this feature. ---For example, a clothing salesman with pages of bar-graphs opposite item descriptions, runs the pen over the item ordered, sizes, colors, and quantity. the salesperson inserts the pen into the AUTOCOM "well" and enters the data. ---Then with the built-in modem, presses one button to access the main office computer with regular phone or cellular phone. ---The office computer accepts the information and returns a printed order with description, prices, total amount of order and delivery dates (obtained from inventory or production line data in the computer). ---The store buyer has an immediate confirmation thus eliminating the two to five week order processing delay that plagues businesses and results in partial filling of original orders. Since no extensive training is required for this simple system it will be welcomed by salespeople. It saves their time and allows them to be more productive. This same option is just as effective in Shipping and Receiving Departments, Inventory Control and every phase of modern business management today. AUTOCOM LEASING AND MANUFACTURING, INC. The founder and owner is William C Maeser who invented and patented the AUTOCOM automatic transceiver after decades of work in the fields of digital electronics, radio, data transmission and telecommunications. Maeser holds numerous patents in the field. In order to insure customized satisfaction all sales are handled directly by AUTOCOM LEASING AND MANUFACTURING. AUTOCOM personnel are well aware of the pitfalls in some high-tech products and have integrated hardware and software into one package that does not require exclusive peripherals. The AUTOCOM automatic transceiver carries a 90 day guarantee. Customers will be given the opportunity to upgrade machines at the additional cost of the upgrade before any new feature is offered on the market.
