MEMORANDUM FOR: Deputy Director of Central Intelligence
Director, Intelligence Community Staff f I" MAR 1985
Executive Secretary
SUBJECT: . Artificial Intelligence Symposium
1. The Third Annual IR&DC-sponsored Artificial Intelligence Symposium,
held at the new DIA building from 19-21 March, was quite successful. There
were close to 500 attendees from Government, Industry, and Academia; and, in
addition, 17 corporations exhibited their artificial intelligence products.
2. The keynote speech was given by the Director, DIA, who told the
attendees that he hoped artificial intelligence initiatives, would provide
help to DIA to cope with the increasing information explosion problems. He
noted that a few years ago DIA was receiving about 5,000 messages a day for
processing and were keeping up with the workload. Today, DIA is receiving
close to 10,000 messages per day, and lack the capability to keep pace with
the flow of information. As an aside, I was told by the Symposium Chairman,
that LTG Williams had been speaking to the HPSCI and had mentioned the
problems DIA was having with the information explosion. When queried by the
HPSCI members as to what he was doing to correct the situation, he cited the
potential of artificial intelligence applications and the utility of the
Symposium to stimulate innovative thinking on Al techniques and applications.
(C)
3. There were 25 principal speakers, as well as a dozen or so others, who
gave presentations in informal special interest working groups. In talking to
many of the attendees, I found that they believed that the Symposium
accomplished two things. First, it presented an update of artificial
intelligence technologies and what new techniques were being developed, and
second and most important, it provided a focus on how these new technologies
might be applied throughout the Intelligence Community. I believe that the
Symposium, through your support, has now reached a critical mass and will be a
continuing annual event. (C)
