I enjoyed meeting you and chatting with you at the dinner hosted by
General Galvin last Monday evening at Quarry Heights.
As you know, the Intelligence Community has been providing stepped-up
support to national security objectives in Central America and the Caribbean
Basin for the past two years. At the request of the Director of Central
Intelligence and the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff, I am coordinating these
efforts closely to ensure support to our national and theater needs, through a
cohesive U.S. intelligence effort in the region. The mechanism for this
coordination is the Caribbean Basin Intelligence Steering Group (CBISG) here
in Washington, which was formed to ensure that intelligence activities in
Central America support U.S. policy objectives there and that there be a
direct line of communication between CIA, DIA, NSA, OSD, the Joint Chiefs of
Staff, and the State Department. I want to invite you to attend any of these
sessions if you are ever in Washington when we are meeting. Ambassador Frank
McNeil, Deputy INR, is our State Department liaison.
My Special Assistant, will be working this
interface with the national Community and-Jack a vin's staff. He is
available to help identify areas where we can provide assistance to your
country team.
I will be traveling in the Central American region from time to time and,
hopefully, will be able to discuss with you matters of mutual interest. In
the interim, if I can ever be of any assistance to you, please do not hesitate
to call.
