A. Identification of Event or Professional Discussion (including dates)
Robert Leiken of the Carnegie Endowment in Washington has asked me
to participate in a colloquium on contemporary Mexico on 30 May, from
8:30 to 10:00 p.m. Lorenzo Meyer, a Mexican professor at the Colegio de
Mexico will make the lead presentation. The session will be off-the-record
and for background only. I know Leiken well(he has often cooperated with
the Agency) gd am confident the meeting will be of high quality and pro-
B. Who (generally) will attend? fessionally conducted.
From 15 to 20 Washington area Latin America specialists, including
government officials(the State Country Director), ftnmer officials (ex-
Asst. Secretary Vaky), congressional staffers, and some media.
C. Foreign Attendance?
Meyer, and perhaps a few other Mexicans, will attend.
D. Any awkward situations anticipated?
Leiken has asked me to comment btiefly on Meyer's presentation. I
anticipate making z short, extemporaneous remarks at a high level of
generalization while avoiding any policy discussion. I am known as an
Agency Latin America specialist, and will be introduced as a NIC analyst

be a ftiendly, scholarly exchange that will not
have any other reverberation's.
