THE US PRESENCE IN PORTUGAL
As of May 1975, 9,712 US citizens resided in Portugal.
This figure includes 2,157 Americans with official
status, 1,759 of whom were military personnel stationed
in the Azores. US citizens in continental Portugal numbered 7,067.
All of the cited figures exclude tourists and other
transients.
The book value of US investment in Portugal at the
end of 1973 wap $193 mi:ilion. Little new investment has
been made since the change of government in April 1974.

Furthermore, Chevron and Texaco have contracts for petroleum
exploration off the Portuguese coast.
Hertz International announced the termination of its
Portuguese car rental operation -- R. M. Carreras, Lda. --
last March citing lack of profitability. In May) Otis
Elevator Co. apparently abandoned an elevator and escalator
manufacturing operation -- Fortis-Otis Ascensores, SARI, --
because of a sharp decline in sales and seizure of the plant
by militant workers.
