The Terrorism
Calendar
Preface This reference aid, formatted as a weekly datebook for 1985, shows
Information available holidays and anniversary dates of historical events that are of known or po-
as of 31 December 1984 tential significance for terrorists or for groups that engage in terrorism. It
was used in this report.
is intended to alert government analysts and policymakers concerned with
terrorism to the potential for political violence as these dates approach.
Certain holidays and anniversaries hold special significance for some
terrorist groups-especially those with an ethnic base. Such a group would
be likely to time a terrorist operation to coincide with one of these dates.
Although significant dates have been included for almost every country,
their citation is not intended to imply that terrorist attacks are to be
expected on any of these dates. The dates are intended to serve as reference
points should other information begin to accumulate indicating planning
for organized violence.
Three types of dates are included:
? National holidays or important historical events.
? Dates of important terrorist attacks or counterterrorist successes.
? Dates known to be important to terrorists or insurgents, such as founding
anniversaries, "martyrdoms," and trials.
