SUBJECT: Enders Request for Community Assessment
on Chile
At State/ARA's morning staff meeting on Monday,
Assistant Secretary Enders requested an intelligence
assessment on the Pinochet government that was
coordinated within the Community (See attachment).
In discussing the request with Bill Knepper, it
was apparent that a full-blown Intelligence
Community estimate probably was not required. In
its stead, could your analysts draft either:
-- a feature-length National Intelligence
Daily article that was fully coordinated
within the Intelligence Community, or
-- a typescript memorandum. The NI0/LA could
coordinate this telephonically within the
Community or call a meeting of Community
analysts to discuss it.
My preference would be the NID feature option
as this would be less burdensome on both your
analysts and this office.
