Of Special Interest This Week ACIS attended an Arms Control Verification Committee meeting chaired by Mr. McFarlane on Policy Community preparations for HPSCI: testimony on 24 May. EURA prepared a London Summit position paper for Mr. McFarlane's use in briefing the President. EURA prepared, at the request of the NSC, security situation reports on for background prior to the President's visit. OEA briefed Ambassador Jeane Kirkpatrick on Monday in preparation for her trip to China. OEA, with assistance from SOVA and OIA, instituted a task force to provide better coverage of developments along the Sino- Vietnamese border and in the South China Sea. OGI analysts briefed Rear Admiral Ricard Cueroni, Commander 7th Coast Guard District and Vice President's Coordinator for South Florida Task Force, on the drug situation in the Caribbean. Of Interest This Week NIO/Africa briefed the US Attache-designate to Zaire on political, economic, and military issues in Zaire; briefed the President of the BND on developments in southern Africa; and met with the NSC Africa officer for general discussions on Africa. NIO at Largel I met with Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Doug Feith to discuss CBW developments, and attended a briefing by a State Department officer on European developments related to Iraqi use of chemical weapons. NIO/Economic attended an International Management 25X1 and Development conference at the National Defense University on "Energy and National Security"; attended a reception at The Council of The Americas' Washington Conference for Corporate Executives; with A/NIO/USSR-EE attended a National Defense University and Defense I y conference on "Soviet Economic Stringencies: Political and Security Implications," and participated in a panel discussion on "The Implications for East-West Competition." NIO/Counterterrroris interviewed Secret Service, 25X1 Customs, and INS representatives in connection with preparation of the DCI's written response to NSDD 138, and submitted a partial first draft to the DCI on plans for enhancing USG ability to combat terrorism. A/NIO/C attended a dination meeting with the FBI Olympics Coordinating Officer and DDO/ to discuss communications paths and reporting philosophy. A/NIO/East Asia attended a special meeting of the Japan Subcommittee of the Defense Policy Advisory Committee on Trade. NIO/SPI Ibriefedl on Soviet ballistic missile defense developments as part of a State/DoD/CIA presentation on the Strategic Defense Initiative; briefed OSD representative to the START delegation, Mike Mobbs, on Soviet ASW capabilities; briefed Pat Parker and some of his Naval Postgraduate School students on Soviet strategic forces and the Joint Net Assessment of US-Soviet strategic forces: and with C/ACIS. briefed ACDA Director the Senate Foreig capabilities, and ram, ASAT and briefed the PFIAB on Soviet strategic offensive forces and the findings of NIE 11-3/8-83. NIO/Warning met with ORD officers at the National Warning Staff to review work done methodology and the application of NIO Western Europe and A/NI0/WEI ]met xith~ to discuss his recent trip to NI0/USSR-EE I ]met with Alton Keel, Associate Director of OMB, to discuss US defense budget prospects; and lectured on Soviet foreign policy and strategy before a Naval Post Graduate School class. IV. Future Activities NI0/GPF will attend a conference on Pacific Basin Defense Cooperation sponsored by the American Defense Preparedness Association in San Francisco next week, and also a working group meeting of the Military Conflict Institute in Berkeley, California. A/NI0/GPF will attend the Tactical Missiles Conference at gin it Force Base on 15-16 May. NIO/Warning will next week host a five-day conference at Fort Meade on personal computing in his role as President of the NSA Computer and Information Science Institute; and will meet with FEMA officers to discuss the creation of a National Disaster Simulation Center and Information Clearing House at FEMA. jv4-, ~
