I am writing this letter as the result of a phone call
from your office after I had written to your Director. I attach
a copy of my letter to him and from it you can readil see the STAT
personal family interest.
Colonel Martin B. Chittick, Army Serial Number 0-100258,
was born in Stuart, Nebraska. He died at Winter Park, Florida
in 1969; 1 enclose herewith copy of his death certificate; it
reflects also his date of birth, and his birthplace as being
Nebraska. I understand the town in Nebraska was Stuart. I
trust this is sufficient for identification.
We are interested in trying to piece together the nature
of Colonel Chittick's OSS assignments, the missions on which
he worked, where he went, and when, whom he may have contacted,
and with what results of any significance. We understand that
his trips to Switzerland, Sweden and France, and possibly other
countries about which we know nothing, had as their basic purpose
obtaining information about the status of the German atomic program.
I request copies of such information as you have which
might be released, which you think would be of interest to us.
I understand that there are search and ocpy fees, which I am
of course within reason prepared to pay. Please do not commit
me to an expense of over $50 without calling me, collect if ne4'
be. We would not be interested in any purely technical disert+t-,ions
that did not throw light on his activities.

I was also advised that there are a tremendous number
of requests such as this, and that you are presently understaffed,
and have a backlog of a year or so in processing the request.
So I do not expect an early reply.
Meanwhile, is it possible that some other search is being
made presently with respect to projects to which Colonel Chittick
may have been assigned, and information might be developed by
"piggybacking" on such a current search?
Also, are the files so arranged that it would be possible
for me to do any searching in them while on some trip to Washington?
I can readily understand if the answer to that is negative, but
I am in Washington from time-to-time and would like to make use
of the opportunity if it happens to be available.

This is to acknowledge that we receives your letter of
25 June 1JC4 in which you provided biographic data concerning
the late Colonel Martin E. Chittick.
We will search for the records concerning Colonel Chittick's
service with the OS:', and we will let you know as soon as they
have been locates: ant: reviewer for releaeaL,ility. The recorc;s
of this office do net indicate that we have received a previous
request for other OSE records that might relate to Colonel Ctsittich's
assignment, but we will check with the reviewing component.
As we mentioncc? in our previous letter, the OS5 records are
being revicr:e.'. systematically with a view to turning then over
to the National Archives as soon as possiile. They will then
be available to the public for research purposes. bowcvrr, we
cannot predict when the particular records you are interested
in will be completed under this review program. Until they are
declassified and turned over to Archives, they cannot be made
available for private research.
