Dear Mr. Chairman:
The purpose of this letter is to acknowledge receipt of the
transcript covering the 2 October 1984 briefing of the Permanent
Select Committee on Intelligence concerning the bombing of our
Embassy in Beirut on 20 September. If possible, we would like
to keep the transcript for a period longer than the five days
authorized in your letter of 10 October. The additional time
required will give our Deputy Directors and the Office of
Security the opportunity to review the testimony on this
important subject. The Office of Legislative Liaison will
coordinate with your Committee Staff on the return of the
transcript.
With regard to the questions for the record attached to the
transcript, I believe they should be answered by the Department
of State since they are responsible for the security of our
embassies. We have advised the Department of State of our
position and will coordinate on their response.
