Approved For Releas 000/08/10 "iIA=#D'086QOI019R000200030012-8 1113 DEC 1977 R EC1), MEMORANDUM FOR: Director, National Photographic Interpretation Center 3.(: 1. FROM: SUBJECT: John: James H. McDonald Director of Logistics Space for CAMS Computer Center 1. My apologies in not responding earlier to your note regarding my memorandum of 4 November 1977. Sorry about the approach taken, but please be assured that you were not singled out. I asked for Les' help in looking STATINTL at several areas in S&T for CAMS space. 2. I guess part of the confusion over at is not only the flex time situation but major perturbations in the CRAMS data reported by your people to Logistics Ser- vices Division. An example is as follows: June 1977 Org. Square Feet Work Stations Pop. NPIC DIA Army 287,845 56,606 - 1563 793 - 904 320 - Total 3 1 November 1977 NPIC 281,186 1411 1244 DIA 35,763 264 182 Army 21,929 241 183 Total 338,878 1916 1609 Approved For Release 2000/08/10 : C1 . Why has the number of work stations decreased? Why has the population increased? In addition, the Office of Comptroller's report endin October 1977 reflects an on-duty strength of only - STATINTL timers for NPIC Departmental. 3. The problem of space or the lack thereof is a problem for all of us, I know; but in view of a moratorium by GSA on acquisition of any new space in the Metropolitan Washington area, we have little choice but to ask everyone for help especially in support of programs in their own interest. If there is any chance of recapturing the former computer room (5,000 sq. ft.) for CAMS, it would certainly be a great help. /s/ James H. McDonald James H. However, the critical nature of the space shortage at Headquarters and the Presidential moratorium on acquisition of additional space in the metropolitan area make consideration of locations outside Headquarters in facilities controlled by the Agency most compelling. To that end members of 1. The Office of Data Processing has informed the Office of Logistics of the need to provide a dedicated computer center for CAMS by the late summer of 1979. The feasibility of constructing the center in Headquarters is being studied by Real Estate and Construction Division vestigate possibilities mere 3. In view of the foregoing I would a preciate ur review of the situation at to determine:STATINTL a. The feasibility of providing space there for CAMS, which is intimately related to NPIC; and, -'b. The relative priority of the new CAMS computer center versus the need for additional PI work stations for the DIA and U.S. Army ele ments. During their tour, they observed numerous work tatio s were vacant or appeared to e un erutllize ; and one area, a former computer room of 5,000 sq. ft. equipped with pedestal flooring, was being vacated for conversion to additional Photo Interpreter (PI) office space.
