Site Construction, Phase II, Project SAFE
This project consists of renovating approximately 8,000
square feet to extend the Project SAFE site from its present
location to the northeast corner of the Ground Floor of Headquarters.
It also includes additional space to house a second Uninterruptible
Power System (UPS) contiguous with the first UPS.
The scheduled completion date of 23 October 1983 has slipped
one week to 30 October 1983. While the SAFE Phase II UPS units
have arrived on site, acceptance testing will not begin until after
the construction contractors complete their work. The testing
time period should be approximately two months.
Construction of the raised floor area is nearly complete with
the fire alarm system installation being the major item remaining.
GSA has scheduled a fire alarm test the week of 24 October 1983.

Construct Chilled Water Risers, Headquarters
This project involves the construction of chilled water risers
in the Headquarters Building by removing the unused vertical con-
veyors in C and F Corridors and constructing the risers in the
same space. The risers would provide a substantial increase in
chilled water capacity for future cooling requirements of minicom-
puters, large word processing systems, and similar high heat
producers.
GSA has indicated the initial efforts to select a design A-E
on this project would not begin until at least November 1983.

Construct Transformer Vault, Headquarters
This project, which is presently under design by the General
Services Administration (GSA), involves the construction of space
to house a new transformer facility and to house a new Uninterruptible
Power System (UPS). In addition, this project includes the electrical
equipment for the transformer facility.
The project will be used to support both communication upgrades
and computer facilities. The future UPS is planned for FY84 and
should be on-line in sufficient time to meet OC's requirements
and to take over from the existing UPS in GJ-16 which is heavily
loaded and will reach its ten-year forecast lifetime in the mid-80's.
This new facility is tentatively planned for the southwest
area of the Headquarters Building. Because of the more urgent need
to relocate the northside utility lines, the FY83 funds for this
project have been withdrawn from GSA and reprogrammed. This project
will be completely cancelled if the new Headquarters Building is
funded in FY84.

Install Central Vacuum Pump, Printing and Photography Building
The purpose of this project is to install a central vacuum
pumping system in a location remote from those areas of the
building constantly occupied by personnel. The noise of the
vacuum pumps has been determined to have contributed or caused
hearing loss to some employees.
A second feature of this project is to provide 480 volt
electrical power service in the Printing and Photography Building.
This service would allow equipment with standard 480. volt require-
ments to be installed without modification to the lower 208 volts
and it will provide the flexibility to install equipment with
greater overall economy. The existing 208 volt switchgear is
nearing saturation and additional switchgear would be required
to provide support to typical rush projects. New presses and
Laserite are examples of equipment designed for 480 volt service.
GSA has advised that the design will be expedited; therefore,
there are no longer any plans to have the Agency accomplish the
design.
GSA is expecting to have the contract for the design and
installation of the vacuum pump system by 1 December 1983, with a
completion date of 15 July 1984. The provision of the 480 volts
electrical power service will be considered as a separate project.

Project: Construct Northside Utility Lines
The utility lines between the Headquarters Building and the
Power Plant provide chilled water, steam, and electricity and
connect via a southern route. The present lines are over twenty
years old and their reliability is becoming suspect.
The 100% redesign for the rerouting of the Northside
chilled water and steam lines and ductbank has been submitted
for review by the A-E. The design review is scheduled to be
completed by the end of October 1983 to allow negotiations
with the contractor to begin.
GSA has authorized the contractor to purchase long lead
time items. This project is scheduled to be completed no later
than mid-May 1984 to meet new building construction requirements.
