"Technological and Economical Comparison of Two Multipurpose TETs [Ileat and
Electric Power Stations] for Distillation of Sea Water"
Moscow, Vodosnabzheniye i Sanitarnaya Tekhnika, No 1, 1972, pp 2-5
Abstract: Results of performance, maintenance cost, reliability, and the
cost of distilled water for two types of distillatlon~plartts (A and B) are
analyzed. Plant A is equipped with separate zoixes for water boiling and
uses seed crystals for reducing the formation oi low-temperature boiler
scale, consisting mainly of calcium carbonate and inagim.-sium hydroxide.
Plant B operates by the open cycle principle with the 17aeol-ng of vapor

generators with demineralized sea water. I)rodocc electrical
energy, steam, and distillad water. The cost of dist;Lllad water is 59
and 86 kopeks/ton water for plants A and B' respectIvI.Ay, with an electrical
encrgy consumption of 66 kopeks/kvatt/hour.

Abstract: A study conducted on about 1000 ren, wmmen,, and chil(b,an livin,,~, in
Leningrad and Murmansk and on 129 volunteers revealed.th-atAhe presence of
beta-inhibitors in the blood si-nificantly reduces tho proportican of clinically
severe fonrs of influenza and parainfluenza (a fall by a factor of 2-5),
decreases the frequency of severe foms of experimento.1 in-M;-em7a (down a
factor of 2), and slows the 6.evelopment of ir.-mune resj7~inse to vaccina-tion. with
hidaly attenuated influenza otrans. Beta-iPhibitoro (io vot exert an arti-

Their protective value stems from their antitoxic eft):!ct, that is, reduction

Moscow, Pis1ma v Zhurnal Eksperimentallnoy i Tooreticheskolf FUIRL, Vol. 12, No. 5,
5 Sep 70, pp 216-220
Abstract: Detection of the pheriomenon of self-focusing and pha:le self -modulation of
radiation in the active element of a neodymiun laser.operating In a sel-f-3ynchroni-
zation mode is reported. It is shm-n that these effticts h1kire a ct~nsiderable irLflu-
ence on the nature of the generaticn of this la,,qer. The nprnlinti.u~ changes in tie
index of refraction of the active eleiwnt of the lasor arifl.ng i4nder self-mo~d ulat ion
and self-focusing are evalikited. A laser with a ring resaniftor (21' = 8.5 nsi~c) was
used in the experiments. The length of the active elerantlwas 10 cm and d1ye nurber
3955 dissolved in nitrobenzene was used as a Q-mdulatar. Pictorts shc-,w a con-
siderable redistribution of radiation intensity under largiv fields in the resonator,
while the intensity distribution in a free generation regilve was imiform. Phase
self-modulation is thus said to explain to aconsiderable t!legrvj the structiwe of the
radiation spectrum of a laser with self-synchron~zation.

Abstract: The formulation of the problem of the diffraction of a
plane sound wave 'by a 6in, serni-infinite elastic p1rute and an approach
to its solution wete first given by G. D. MIALYUZEINETS at the Fourth

appear in Trudy Akustichesko,.go Inzz;tituta (Tran-sact:,J.ons of the Acoustic

following reasons: (1) the lack of a sufficitntlu~' complete tntory on

"Loss of Stability of a Cylindrical Shell on Longitudinal Itipact"
Moscow, Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Hekhanika. Tverdogo Tela, No 1, January-
February 1971, pp 20-23
Abstract: The forms of 1GSS of stability of a cylindrical shell on longitudinal
impact of an infinite mass moving with a velocity Vagainst the end of the
shell are studied in this paper. Equations are derived which define the bend-
ing of the sheld during the linear stage of loss of stability. It is pointed
out that the bends develop with time as the superposiElon of two types of
waves. The amplitudes of the wave of the first type -oscillate with titne, that
is. they remain limited, and the amplitudes of the second type waves increase
exponentially with time leading to loss of stability of the shell. However,
all of the waves of the second ty e do not make a sigmificaat contribution to
the stability loss process since the amplitude of the:wave which has the maxi-
mum growth rate overtakes the. others and becomes predominalut. The predominant
wave is axisymmetric.
Equations are derived which define the characteristics of the predc-min-
ant stability loss wave without restrictions on the Impact velocity. After

comparing the equations neglecting inertial reduction, Oat is, the effect of
the :Lntertia of the shell elements in the~radial direction on the propagation
of the longitudinal compression wave, and the equations with and without re-
strictions on imvact velocity it is concluded that thera: factors have little
.effect on the form of stabilit7 loss. It'is pointed oul: that it is known that
in the case of a static load on a cylindrical shell the shape afthe stability
lose remains indeterminant in the linear approximation. In ehe case of an
impact load on the end of the shell, the loss of stabilEty with small bends
occurs in axisymmetric form. Further development of thu bends is not del;cribed
by the linear equations of the shells. lerhen tile bends reach a magnitude on
the order of h, siznificant membrane stresses occur in the shell. ToRether
with the occurrence of nonlinear effects,~the form of the stability loss has
to lose its axisyrLmetric nature. When the bends increue tothe point that
the nonlinearity becomes the defining factor, the sftell:assunes the forra of
isometric bending of a cylindrical surface. The relatins obtained in this
paper for calculating the wLvelength in the linear stagi~ of stability loss
give values which are 12% and 10Z lower, than the experizu--atal. values obtat'ined
by Lindberg and Herbert.
