The thermodynamic activity can be calculated from data on vapor pressure. Above all, low vapor pressure is determined by the method of Knudsen or LanGmuir (Len[-,,myur) (also trith variations). Experi!.Iiental difficulties ari3ing in thiG connection can be removed by calculatin6 the vapor precsure from the composition of the gas phase. A corresponding equation was obtained for binary systems (Ref 1) for cal- culatin.- the thermodynamic activities of the components of the systems Fe-11i, Fe-Co, and Fe-111n. In the case under discussion this mathematical relation is deduced for ternary systems and is simpler than the calculation method (Ref 2). The author starts from the Dyugem-MarCules equation for Card 1/2 three-component systems and explains the calculation by The Calculation of Thermodynamic Activities in Terniry Systems using a concentration triangle (Fig 1). The value of the vapor pressure of the pure component is used for the cal- culation. It was suggested that the disease pathogens had been transmitted by the urine of infected swine, wallowing in a stream above a location where crabs were caught. To substantiate this theory, the water of the stream was examined for pathogenic Leptospira ty a method described in dz- tail in the text. Scratches were inflicted on the extremities of guinea pigs, whie,"n were then placed In namplen of the intream. water under corli- tions favorable to the penetration of Leptoopira. The biological method employed led to the following results and con- clusions: 1. A culturp- of' Leptospira was obtained from three guinea pigs dur- ing a period of Increnood temperature through the uowlng of blood Vrom -the heart on a "Terok" mt4ium. 2. The role of thu vator factor in tll(- epidemiolojw of leptoopirotlis was substantiated, and the connection between the diseatse in h--t-:.ars ar,-' the water con-laminated with urine from swine infected with and'swine, which had had the diseise was established. 3. By the method of immersing scratched extremities in urine from sows suspected of baving leptospirosis, two strains of Leptospira were obtained aftor sowing blood and urine from one of the guinea 1)1[10 wbIch had become ill. 4. This method also confirmed the fact that- virulent Leptospira were eliminated with urine of young pigs experimentally infected with ieptc- spirosis. 5. Experimental leptospirosis with pronounced jaundice was produced in two of eight susliks known to be susceptible to nonicteric leptospiro- sis by infecting the suslikG with blood and urine of human leptospirocis patienta. A culture of Leptospira wan ii~i,-Aatcd by sowIng blood from. one of the susliks which had developed the disease as a result of infection with the bloodof a human patient. 6.
