Tungsten was rolled at 1200, 1300, and 1450C " with reductiomg of 10, 20, and 30% per pass; molybdenum was rolled at 950, 1050, atid 1150C with reductions of 10, 20, 30, 50, and 55% per pass. A sharp Increase in thc roll prescure, tor e forward alip, and friction coefficientl~-qas observed with change from air ~Mos,;here to a pressure of 0.1 mm Hg. This was caused by in- creased fz -iction. Lowering the pressure from 0.1 to 0.005 mm Hg had little or no additional-i'f-fect. Increasing the rolling temperature in vacuunt of 0.01 mm lig had an insignificant effect on the specific preoaure in rolling molybdenum, but appreciably -L 29920-66 ACC NRs AP6017300 decreased the specific pressure in rolling tungsten, e.g., from 74 at 1200C to 64 and 2 60 kg/mm. at 1300 nud 1450C, respectively. The specific pressure increased with increasing reduction. In rolling tungoten in a vac 'uum of 0.1 nim 11g, increasing the reduction from 20 to 30% led to a specific pressure increase from 74 to 91 kg/mm2 at 1200C and from 60 to 69 kg/mm2 at 1450C. In rolling molybdenum the specific pressure increased from 44 to 96.5 kghm12 with increasing reduction from 10 to 45% at 1050C. In vacuum rolling at high temperatures and reductions a sticking of metal to the rolls was observed. In rolling; of tungsten at 1450C with a reduction of 35%, an intensive sticking resulted in splitting of metal. Little or no sticking was observed at 1200C. Noticeable'isticking was observed in rolling molybdenum at 1150C. Experi- ence gained by studying the Paleozoic effusive layers of the Altay, in Kazakhstan and other regions has shown that none of the existing classifications for elastic volcanogen rocks (Vol' *f, Ventvors and Villyams, Ye.T. Filters, through which 150-200 thousand m3 of the air were drawn, were assayed by the autoradiographic method. Separate hot particlf!s were isolated and subjected to y-spectrometry. For converting the results of auto- radiographic assay of filters into values expressing the activity of separate aerosal particles, a nomograph was drawn using e6 second autoradiograph. The data presented point to an-abriipt-,fall in the concentration of hot aerosol particles in the atmosphen during the period from 163 to 104 when atmospheric nuclear testing iras discontinued. The modifications introduced had the object of creating Kmtdsen conditions (high vacuum and low air inflow rates) and they are listed and discussed. (Kotellnyy agregat TK2,dlyia zzhiganiya Estonskikh slantsev.) L 214-7-1/3-4 PERIODICAL: "Energomashinostroyeniy ". (Power Machinery Constructioa.) 7, No.7, Vol-3, pp.1-6. (U.S.S.R.) ABSTRACT: There is at present no operating data on the combustion of pulverised Estonian shale in high pressure boilers. The shales are only used in small boilers. In the existing boilers the aBb forms clinkers on the superheater tubes even with medium stean conditions. There is also heavy wear of the water economiser. A special approach was therefore required to the problems of boil-er design for high pressure sets burning Estoaian shales. The properties of Estonian shales are then described in detail. They are low grade, highly reactive power fuels with a calorific value of 2,100 'to 2,700 kcal/k,-,, and an ash content of 14-22% weight. Some of tJie ash melts at a very low temperature. The-shales :.%on- tain free calcium carbonate so that the fly ash contains free lime which reacts with the sulphurous gases to form deposits of Ca304- The ash characteristics govern the temperature ranges of the boiler processes. In designing a boiler for an output of 220 1/3 'tons/hour at a steam pressure of 100 atms and a superheat temperature of 540 C, burning Estonian shales, the followingiluiin A. boiler set of the Taganrog Boiler Works for the:Cc-jnbustion of Estonian shales . (Cont.) 13.4-TL/3.4 conditions were accepted. In view of the lack of experience i~a burning Estonian shiales in high pressure boilers ojal~r well tried components and operating conditions would be used. In order to reduce clinkering of fly ash on the heating surfaces the super.- heater was made of separate screens. Available data shows that in the gas temperature range of 600 to 650 C built-in ash arrestera do not work reliably and, therefore, the boiler was designed wlth- out one. However, in order to remove some of the coaraer ash biafore the water econo.miser a special chamber was designed. The boilax s.?t is then deddribed in detail under the fOll,Dwinir headings: the furnace chaimber, (of the usual prismatic shape with nection 7100 x 9852 mm)5 the superheater of the radiation-convoctive type Ollustrated in Fi&2); the water economiser, which uses a atop- wise motion of the water (Fig-3) so that the Wiling part of tho ei2onomiser can be in the higher temperaturle range., tkkus consider- ably reduciqr the size of the steam volume.
