S07./12-59-8-5/1/ TITLEt Testing of Model to Investigate Bubbling in Tank Yurnaces kIssiedovaniye na modeli burleniya v vannykh steklovarennykh pechakh) PERIODICAL: 3teklo i keramika, 1959, Nr u. pp 15-1b (USSR ABSTRACTt The present paper provides some results of investigations of the bubbling of the glass mass carried out on a tank furnace model. The experimental model plant has already been described by the E.uthor kFootnote 1). It had been built on the basis of the theoretical data -,,Piven by Professor A. A. Sokolov a scale of 1:35 (Footnote 2). Bubbling in the model was brought about by blowing air through the plant (Figure 1). Figure 2 shows the movements of the glass metal with and without bubbling, and a detailed description is given. 'rho analysis of the results obtained in the case of bubbling make it seem necessary to find an economical furnace design which would make it possible to make use of the advantages of bubbling but eliminate its un- favorable consequences. One of the possible solutions would be a design which proved advantageous in the case of the model. This design isEnown in figure 5. Furthermore, a formula for Card 112 calculating the bubbling temperature of the glass metal is given. Testing of Model to Lavestigate Bubbling in Tanx Furnaces 3002-59-8-5/17 C,)nclusion: It may be expected that the use or bubbling in continuous-operation tank furnaces will improve the homoji,,,~nizatio*n and clarification of the glass metul as well as boost the out- pUt of the furnace. The use of a boat is thus no longer necessary. The use of bubbling renders necessary, however, a change in tho furnace design. In the vone of btibblin~, a greater heat supply is noce-joary, which mi,,,;ht be obtained by additional electric neatin,3. Experiments with the model cannot establish de:~initely whether continuous bubbling or intermittent bubbling is the more economical method. Thin question can be solved only by experimentation with furnaces used In industrial production. Th(ire are 3 figures and 2 Soviet references. The calculation methods, worked out and published by Do So Velev (Ref I)p are not sufficient Ja this caaet aince the looking device is not only responsible for the temperature and the amount of the glass massi but also its quality9 and since the type of the looking device alters the flow bf the glass mass considerably, which fiat again influences its quality. Looking devices of various shape are further I ahoWn in figures 1-4, and described in detail. 15 variants of complicated schemes of looking devices are shown in figure 5# and described in detail. The main dimensions of the looking device are mentioned in figure 6, and the modt expodiont dimensions are further given. A. A* Sokolov Uas worked out the design of a deepened, controllable runnergato, The design of the oonstruotion in shown in figure 7P and in f1jurs 89 the division Card 1/2 of the furnace cooling section into a n=ber of chamele.which Influence of the Design of the Looking Device on the BOT/72-59-5-3/16 kow of the Glass Mass nake it possible to connect a number of glass-prooss%UW slachines. The amount of the furnace charge mact correspond to the-amount of the glass mass being processed (Fig 9).'- Conclusions. Based on the results of the experiments, carried 3ut on the model# the author of this paper states that the designs 15 and 12 (Pigs 5 and 6) can be considered the beat variants. The hydxa4lio schemes shown for the various looking devices could probably also be use4 for,elootro- and gits-electro-furnaces. There are 9 figures and I Soviet riiference. TITLE; Model Investigations of the Slow-down Coefficient of Looking Nvices in Tank, Furnaces (Issledovaniya na modeli koeffitsiyentov tormozheniya zagraditellnykh ustroystv v vannykh pechakh) PERIODICAL: Stekl,~ i keramika, 1959, 11r 6, pp 27 - 32 (USSR) ABSTRACT; Tablo I coatains the equations developed by Professor A. A. So- kolov for computing the data of the flow along the tank axis which hold only for rectangular furnace basins. The furnaces in operation are, however, not equipped with rectangular basins but various looking devices which have great effect on the flow of the melt, and can therefore not be determined ana- lytically for the time being. In these cases the most favorable solution is offered by experimental determination according to a model set up by Academician 11. V. Kirpichev and Professor A, A. Sokolov. Figure I illustrates the scheme of an experimQntal plant constructed by the author of this article on a scale of 1:35. Glycerin was used as model liquid. The air temperature of 0 Card 1/3 the interior wan automatically maintained at 20 + 0-5 , The rate Model Investigations of the Slow-down Coefficient of Sr-V/72-59-6-6/18 V Locking Devicos in Tank Furnaces of flow was determined by photography and the visual method after introducing ink threads into the melt (Fig 2). The author of this article investigated the four mos+ mportant locking dqvices: the shuttle, a tapering, a projecting threshold, and a *;hreshold wall. The resultant slow-down coefficients are listed in table 2 and represented in figures 3,4,5 and 6. Figure 7 Illustrates the entire flow consisting of the conveying flow and development flow. The shape of the locking device shown in :!igure 8 was checked by the author by the model method, and it was found that it stood the test. Conclusions: The experimental :results permitted tile determination of the dependence for the determination of the olovi-down of convection flows. This allows also to determine the flow consumption between the melting- andthe cooling sections and to set up a scientifically founded heat Ioalanco of the coolinF section of the furnace. The author em- :phasizaa the noed of investigating in future the influence exerW by locking devices upon the quantity and quality of the frit in the tank by the model method. The experimental results as well Card 2/3 as data on the furnace operation may form the theoretical basis Model Investigations of the Slow-down Coefficient of SOV/72-59-6-6/18 Looking Devices in Tank Purna.-ea of a calculation and construction of the low-temperature treat- ment section of glass-malting furnaces.
