Spaet). It is concluded that these theories do not dis-
close the physical essence of the concept "hardness by

discussed. A special photographic film carrying a pattern of
straight parallel lines is attached to the surface of the body
which is then subjected to deformation. subsequent superposition
of the original pattern in suitable illumination leads to aserie.-

TEXT: The diameter of the deformation zone after impression of a 90 0 cone
into steel, type 45, was made visible by the photographic application of
~ grating, to the specimen, with line distance 0.02 mm, this being done
~ method described by Yu. V. Kostylev, G. A. Batranina (Zavodskaya
laboratoriya, XXIV, 1, 114 (1956)). The specimen was photographed on the
same plate before and after the impression of the cone. Superposition of
the pictures of the deformed and the non-deformed grating produced moire'
effects which made it possible to measure the deformation zone. The
accuracy of measurement increases the narrower the grating, but is limited
by the resolving power of the photographic material. There is 1 figure.

For differential diagnosis of pancreatic cysts 3 patients were subjected to L v.
urography and 4 to retrograde pyelography. In 2 of the latter the kidneys were
examined by contrast and a pneumoret rope ritoneu m (P. R. P3 by the Rivas, method
with the administration of oxygen or nitrogen oxide was simultaneously performed.
1. v. urography disclosed deformities of the left kidney, caused by pressure of
typical (according to Chamberlin and Gimber) cysts in the body and tail of the pan-
creas. It was also noted that large cysts of the head of the pancreas cause com-
pression not only of the left, but also of the right kidney. In case of large cysts of

the pancreas compression deforr4ities of the kidneys are easily revealed by retro-
grade filling. Retrograde pyetography and P. R. P. visibly demonstrate the rela-
tionship between the kidneys and the pancreatic cysts thus excluding kidney lesion.

examinations performed. The following technique was used. A catheter to inlro-
duced into the main bronchus of the lung, Next 20 ml. of liplodol -talcum emul sion
is introduced under X-ray control, At the end of introduction of the contrast me-
dium the patient to asked,to take a deep breath. The medium In evenly distributed
along thebronchial ramifications of the lung. The patient lies on the affected side.
The methods of anaesthesia applied in bronchography are discussed in detail.

Abstract: It was shown that agar may be used in lieu of heparin in stu-
dies of metachromasia. Cramp relievers acting directly upon the smooth
muscles, antihistamine compounds) local anesthetics, and antifibrillants
inhibit the metachromasia; atropine, scopolamina, and Hypertensin do not.
The latter appear to perform like activators. It is therefore doubtful
whether these substances are capable of becoming bound to acidic poly-
saccharides in vivo. 11 references, including 7 German and 4 Western.
