TITLEs Latest Excavations in Pompeii (Noveyshiye ruskopki v

PIRIODICALs Vostnik Akadomii nauk SSSR, 1958, Nr 12, PP 71 - 74 (USSR)
ABSTRACTs Excavations in Pompeii began 210 years ago. Not until 1860,
however, were they started on a scientific level and according
to plans. They are closely connected with the name of the
great Italian scholar Giuseppe Fiorelli, as proceeds from
the work by 1. To. Sergiyonko (Ref 1). Measured at its
scale and its completeness Pompeii is the most magnificent
monument of the antique or&. A description of the monuments
of Pompeii is found in the guide edited by A. Maiuri (Ref 2).
The private lodgings excavated in Pompeii in recent years
help to broaden our knowledge of the town's economy and the
way of living of certain grades of society. Figures 1, 2,
and 3 feature interesting buildings and pictures. At present,
archaeologists are engaged in restoring whole quarters of
the town to a state approaching as closely as possible con-
ditions at the time of the catastrophe in the year 79. This

results. It provides valuable material to historians of
the antique for the study of antique economics, public life
and figurative arts. There are 3 figures and 2 references,

ABSTRACT: The authors have developed a device to facilitate air samp-
ling from a moving tr9ctor (or other vehicle) under field conditions.
The device includes rotereters taken from aspirators (produced at the
Kresnogverde-yets Plant), two 20 m rubber hoses, a 2 m wooden pole and a
metal T-piece inserted into the air filter pipe of the trector during
air sampling. The long hoses (20 m length) ore connected at one end to
a T;piece and to rotemeters at the other end. Short hoses (length not
giv n) are connected to absorbers a.t one end and to rotameters at the
other end. The abort hoses with the absorbers ere tied to a wooden pole
at the proper distance from the ground to allow air sampling at the

breathing level, With 4 rotameters graduated from 0&1 to 20 I/min, air
intake rates are measured accurately and two air serples may be taken at
the same time. Only one operator Instead of two is required and the
tractor does not have to be stopped every 1C to 15 min as In the case of
conventional air sampling devices. The authors recommend that the medl-
eel industry oreanize the production of dry rotameters for laboratory
use in rural sanitation epidemiological stations, Orig. art., has: None

Abstract : Digestive processes in the small intestines of swine have not been
sufficiently investigated. The authors of this article describe a'
method they developed which consists of double anastomosis; they'used
cannula made of Plexiglas. The operation described lasts 1 1/2-2 hours:
it was successfully performed on 2 1/2-3 month old swine that recovered
within 8-10 days. Illustrations. Four references, all USSR.

RAYS (Russian text) - Utekhin E. V. - VFSTN. HENTG, I RADIOL, 1958,
33/3 (48-52) Graphs
Two methods were employed In irradiation of the hypophyseal area: (1) external
irradiation and (2) Irradiation by Co6O preparations in the nasophary". The -y-ray
doses received by the hypophysis were determined on a phantom, constructed with
a human skull as framework. The I at method was found to be better than the 2nd.
In the 2nd method the hypophyseal area received only 21% of the dose received by
the soft tissues surrounding the radioactive preparation, while in the lat method
40% of the doFe on the surface of the head reached the hypophysis. the skin focal
distance being 25 cm.

ABSTRACT: A speedometer is described that records on paper tape the actual
speed of a rolling stock within 15-120 km/hr. The speedometer principle of
operation includes interrupting by pedals (under the weight of the rolling fltock~
two electromagnet circuits whicli restrain the spring contacts of a reco=der.
The speedometer is housee. ina metal case which contains two coils with 100 --n
vinyl wire, two pedals, a storage a= a dry battery, and the recorder; t~ye latter
comprises a drum with t-vpe, a driylng Morse-type mechanism, and two electra-
magnets with sprbig contacts; the contacts are hinged with. the recorder levex
that carries the =ecozdirg pen. The pedals are installed at 50-75 m from each
o' ther, Insta-11ing and hooking-ko the speedometer takes 10-15 rn:.n. itto weight
is 12 kg. Vie speedometer c.--?,. be constructed in a line worksh,3p.

ABSTRACT: Like polymers, amorphous selenium consists of long molecules with in-
teraction both between the chains and within each chain. if tension Is applied
to Se In the presence of heat, the molecules will orient themselves In the direc-
tion of the tension, resulting In elastic or Inelastic displacements. The boundar-
ies between the partially oriented chains of amorphous Seshould behave Me a
viscous substance whose coefficient of viscosity decreases with increasing tempera-
ture. Under the appropriate conditions, It should therefore be possible to observe
inelastic phenomena such as restorative creep under constant stress, relaxation of
stress under constant strain, an elastic aftereffect following removal of the load,
and Internal friction, I.e. phenomena In which the strain and stress are not
single-yalued functions of one another In the pre-elastle region. In the present

paper, creep and stress relaxation were Investigated by the method of torsional
vibrations In fibers (30-60 it x 30 mm) of amorphous Se. A straight-line relation-
ship was obtained between the stress (as measured by the current flowing through
a galvanometer) and the strain (as measured by the deflection of a mirror),at
temperatures from -20 to +30C, indicating that the experiments were carried out In
the range of elastic deformations. The creep curves shown In Fig. I of the En-
closure indicate that creep decreases with decreasing temperature. Hath'ematical
expressions are developed for the relationship between creep and both temperature
and time, and It Is demonstrated that the ratio between the moduli of relaxation
and elasticity Is less than 1.0. Fig. 2 of the Enclosure shows'the relaxation of
stress under constant strain. Calculations revealed that the energy of activation
for amorphous Se Is on the order of 6200cal./mol.; after Incubation for 6-8 hrs.
at 33C, however, the energy of activation Increases to approximately 12000 cal./
mol., due apparently to a partial transition from the amorphous to the crystalline
state. Even this figure Is low compared to the activation energy for metals, due
to the linear polymeric structure of.selenlum. 'OrIg,, art. has: 6 figures and 5
formulas.
