Sofia, Rentgenologiya i RadiologiX , Vol 5, No 2, 1966, pp 110-117
Abstract (authors' Russian and English summaries, modified]: Emphasizing the
importance of scintillography in elucidating the structure and form of the
thyroid prior to conservative or surgical treatment, the authors present their
five yearn of experience in treating 1170 patients who, on the basis of their
scintilloGrams, are divided 10n three groups. In the first group, 474 patients
the changes in the form and size of the thyroid are pronounced. In the 2nd
group of 693 patients, there are nodule-like formations. The third group of
three patients shows anomalies. Seven Soviet-bloc and 2 Western references.

ABSTRACT: Investigation of the irritating eftect of high-frequency alternating
current on animals and people showed that: Changes in the amperage
are similar in character to the changes in the irritating current (IC):
the amperage of IC changes little within the lower F range, but in--
creases rapidly with frequency (F) of the order oi 5000 cps; the
character of the variation of IC and its magnitude is also dependent
on the area of the electrode; in the 16-1000 cps range there is prac-
tically no noticeable decrease in the danger of the electric current
upon the increase of its F; a noticeable decrease of the effect occurs
when currents have a F over 2500 cps; currents with F of 200 and
500 cps are no less active biologically and, therefore, no less dan--

ABSTRACT: Precise methods are investigated for determining the eigonvalues of real
nonsymmetric matrices, applied to the digital computer "Ural-111. The method of
bordering, which is insensitive to particular singularities of matriceso is recom-
mended for preliminary computation of the coefficients of the cha cteristic polynozdj~
Pn(A) of matrices up to tenth order. The method is based on direct COMPUtation Of
the coefficients of the polynomial Pk(A) of the bordered matrix Akk from the known
coefficients of the polynomial Pk-l(~) of the bordered matrix Ak-1,k-1- A block-
scheme is given for programming computations by the given method for the coefficients
of Pk (;k), composed in the operation of a floating point. Numerical methods are
described for finding roots of the characteristic equation P,(x) - 0. A brief

discussion is given of the methods of LobachevBkiy, Bernoulli, and Khichkok. A
block-scheme is given for programming computations of roots of a n-th degree algebraic
equation using Xhichkok'a method. It is noted that simultaneous use of the method Of
bordering for determining the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial and the
method of Xhichkok allows rapid and rather precise finding of all eigenvalues of a
real nonsymmetric matrix up to tenth order on the digital.computer 141ral-111.

ABSTRACT: On the basis of a statistical analysis of a large amount of labora-

experiments involving use of a heat-insulated "odometer" 200 rnrn in

thor proposes quicker methods for determining the compressibility co-
efficients of frozen soils that undergo thawing while subjected to load5

TITLE: Investin gations on the storage of North Sea herring in refrigerated sea water. 1.
Technological investigations
SOURCE: Miolodillnaya toklinika, no. 2, 1966, 32-36
TOPIC TAGS: food refrigeration, food preservation , fishing ship, sea water
ABSTRACT: The purpose of these investigations was to elicit the technological advantages of
storing fish in refrigerated sea water in comparison with storage in ice and the effect of
additions to the water of high-polymer compounds on the physicochemical indexes and quality
of the fish. During the cruise of an experimental fishing boat two experiments were set up:
UDC: 637.56.004.4:551.4G3/.46-1
ACC NRs AP6020034
the first was on the storage of herring in refrigerated sea water and in ice and the second on
the storage of herring in refrigerated sea water with the addition of carboxymethyl cellulose
(CMC), which counters swelling and extraction of nitrogenous substances, in a quantity of
0.6% w-t. Large herking measuring 23-25 cm were used in the first experiment and average-
sized (18-20 cm) for the second experiment. Two hours after the start of coolingr the sea
water the temperature of the herring dropped to -IC and was later held during the entire
experiment at the level from -1.2 to -1.5C, the temperature of the water during the entire
experiment being maintained at 0. 1-0. 2C above the cryoscopic point of the herring. The
investigation revealed that the main defect of herring when stored in refrigerated sea water
was oxidation of the fat. As a result of this the large herring of the fall catch can be stored
in a good condition for no more than 3 days. If the herring are stored for a longer time it
is necessary to introduce additatives inhibiting the oxidative rancidity of the fat. To prevent
: lie formation of cracks the herring should be stored at a temperature close to the cryoscopic
point but not below it since freezing impairs the structure of the muscle tissue. The addition
to sea water of CMC in a small concentration (1.6%) does not promote a decrease of swelling.
rurther investigations of the use of larger concentrations of CMC are needed. It is also
pointed out that when herring is stored in sea water for 3 days it is not necessary to change
the water, which appreciably simplifies storage. Orig. art. has: I table and 3 figures.

investigated (Refs 1, 2). In 1957-58, the authors oolleated
800 specimens in the Pribalkhansl~iy ax--a the classification
of which was carried out by L. S. Isayeva-Petrova in the
laboratory of the expedition (see Association). The plant-
remains originated from 4 different places: Cheleken (red-
coloured rock), Boya-Dag (Akchagyl), the Perevalo-Aydinakaya
Range, and Monzhukly (Apsheron). The fossil Pliocene flora
does not characterize a Plakor vegetation, but, on the whole,
a bank flora which in all habitats bears the same stamp for

Consequently, the Tugai form a relatively ancient type of
vegetation which existed already in the middle Pliocene.
They were at that time probably more widely distributed than
they are today. So, for instance, there do not occur any in
the Pribalkhanskiy are-a. Ecologic properties of the
Tugai favored their bedding-in, and so they are often found as
fossils. Xerophile species, such as Phyllites integerrimus
Isaeva and Cercis cf. siliquastrum, which have no relation to
the Tugai, may have been carried down from higher-lying
mainland. The layers, from which the above remains originate,
have an age based on lithology, 'Launa and micro-f-ana, and
can be dated with certainty. Most of the habitats of the
fossil flora, characterize certain facial conditions: fresh
water, continental delta, and certain regression-phases uf
maritime waters. The elimination of the regression-phases by
means of the plant macro-remains, is also of a certain
stratigraphical importance. Professor Ye. P. Korovin gave
advice and helped with the work. There are 1 figure and
2 Soviet references.
