TEXT: The 16th.Congress of the Society of Polish Geodesists was held at
Lublin on-April 8 - 10, 1962. It was attended by 124 representatives from all
provincial brandws of the Society. The following reports were read at the Con-
gress: B. Szmielew, Chairman of the Main Administration of Geodesy and Carto-
graphy, "Technical progress in the state geodetic service" (see abstract 12GP7); V/
B. Lipin'ski, Head of the Geodesy Department of the MiniAtry of Municipal Econo-
my, "Tasks of geodetic service In municipal economy" (see abstract 12G3); W.Plos-
ki, Chairman of 'the Main Board of the Society of Polish Geodesists, "Problems be-
fore the Society of Polish Geodesists"Joee abstract 12G7). In speeches of de-
legates main attention was paid to necessity of technical progress In the field

The,16th Congress of the ~ociety.of Polish Geodesists WOO-1/A101
of geodesy,.which is connected with raising qualifications of geodesists in L"
photogrammetry, electronics, modern methods of reproduction and problems of
regional planning. The magazine of the Society "PrzeglN geodezyjny" must play an
important role in propaganda of technical progress. It was pointed out that a
raise of qualifications of specialists must be accompanied by a raise of salaries.
A fuller utilization'of scientific-technical-information becomes necessary. Geo-
detic youth was very active in the work of the Congress. During the Congress an
exhibition of geodetic works was organized, completed at the territory of the
Lublin province, and of works awarded prizes at the All-Poland competition of
quality. (Honorable gold and silver decorations of the Main Technical Organiza-
t1on of Poland were handed over to 15 members of the 89ciety and the Correspond-
ing Member of the Society, N. I. Modrinskiy, (USSR), awarded for the active work

TITLE: Reaction of plutonium dioxide with acidic ammonium
fluoride in the absence of water

TEXT: Plutonium tetrafluoride is used for the preparation of
metallic Pu. The described method consists in the
fluorination of plutonium dioxide with ammonium fluoride in the
absence of water and is analogous to the method of preparation of
uranium tetrafluoride (Ref-5: J.Van Impe, Chem.Eng.Progress, 50, 5,
230 (1954)). A weighed quantity of plutonium dioxide is mixed in

,a 0.2 nil platinum crucible (Fig-3) with a 20 -50% stoichiometric
excessof re-crystallized and-dried ammonium-fluoride. The reuctim
mixture is heated in a vertical furnace to a previously determined
temperature at w1iigh it is kept for 30 minutes; then the crucible
is weighed. Tht st.arting.temperature is 70*C, the end-

those described by J.Rodden (Ref.6: Analytical 'chemistry of the
Manhattan project. McGraw-Hill Book Co., INC (1950)) and
P.Rirk (Ref.7: Quant�tative Ultramicroanalysis, N.Y. (1950)).
The obtained results were checked by control expcriments by the
Debye-Schorrer X-~ay method. Thermo-gravimetric tests on the
Pu02- NHIHF2 mixture yielded the temperature-time dependence
during experiments with 20 to 50 mg of this mixture. The thermo-
gravimetric curve and results of chemical analyses showed the
temperature range of stability of these compounds:

Inveatigations of werum proteins and their physiological pattern (luring labour and
puerperium may be of importance for diagnosis In casem of complications. Forty-
seven canes of women In labour or in the first 2.1 hr. of puerperium were investi-
gated. Blood samples were taken 4 times; at the beginning of labour, following
delivery and 6 and 24 hr.. later. Total proteins and protein fractions were dcter-
mined. The results indicate that during parturition the serum prutein pattern Chan -
ges. The degree of these changes is influenced by blood loss. During the initial
period of the puerperiurn further changes occur, particularly in the 'j-glo
fraction.

the blood sugar level, as well as the circulation and re-
spiration in 200 cases of early interruption of pregnancy
with the use of various anaesthetics. The results of their
investigation indicate that women should be hospitalized
for abortions and that it is absolutely necessary for the
operation to be painless. Of the 14 references cited only
one is German and the others Polish.

The article states that despite the fact that Q fever has been
reported throughout the USSR,, i.e., the European part,, the Transcaucasus,
Central Asia, and Kazakhstan.. the epidemiology, clinical manifestations,
pathogenesis, and laboratory diagnosis of this disease have been studied
insufficiently. Since its route of entry into the human organism is the
same as that of other pathogenic diseases, i.e., dysentery., typhoid fever,
poliomyelitis, and infectiouA hepatitis, it was decided to study the coex-
istence.of these diseases in places where they were most wides1read.

In 1955 and 1956 in an industrial city, a number of cases ot Wt -
tiouB hepatitis occurred, 59.7%'Of the cases occurring betueen Octobe.
ard February. Outbreaks occurred tn families, schools, nurseriefi, kind.=-
gartens, and dormitories. The nwj-irity of the patients, 57$, were between
the ages of 3.6 and 30. This out-break was followed by a number of cases
of a febrile disease which was diagnosed as virus influenza. The clinical
-nifestations and treatment of both diseases are described.
Dried specimens of blood were obtained from 81 patients, put into
solution, and subjected to complement fixation reactions with either
Rickettsia burnetti antigens or cther--ick--ttsiaIPmtijpns. Of the 57 specimens
,.reacted with R. burnetti, 31 gave positive reacLions.
It is recommended that complement fixation reactions with R. burnetti
be carried out in any locality where there is a mass outbreak of a febrile
disease and that if the reaction cannot be carried out locally, dried blood
specimens be dispatched to a central laboratory. (U)
