By carrying out 326 serum aldolase tests in contacts of infectious hepatitis in 2
closed communities, it was possible to detect the cases of icterogenic infectious
hepatitis already during the incubation. and also the anicteric. ambulatory and in-
apparent cases, whose consequent isolation led to liquidation of the epidemic focus
by nentralization of the source of infection. At present, the serum aldolase test is
the or ly one permitting detection of the disease during the incubation, whereas
the usual routine tests are negative. By the early detection of the hepatitis, and by
the diagnosis of the anicteric or inapparent forms, it becomes possible to start
treatment early. Thus. the course is improved and the number of post-hepatitic
sequelae reduced. The method can also be used for the detection of virus carriers.

on the liver, the authors present and discuss a case history
.of acute hepatitis caused by the use of Suplin, a phenometra-
zine drug widely used to treat obesity. Difficulties of esta-
blishing a correct diagnosist especially of differentiating be-
tweenvarious forms of epidemic hepatilist are examined, and the
use of morphologic tests in addition to clinical examination
is strongly urged.

Abstract; States that while the incidence of epidemic heDatitiS
increased in Rumania, there was a slight decrease among military
personnel; this is attributed to "better conditions" in the mili-
tary collectives. The authors emphasize the problems associated
with the transmission of the disease, esDec-iaily parenteral -trans-
mission. Of the total number of cases hospitalized in 196!, 178
cases (54.9 percent) were due to parenteral infection. Grouped
in categories with regard to the certainty of parenteral infection
are discussions as to the evolut-ion of the disease, the icteric
period, the clinical characteri-stics and the duration ol the
disease.

that by isolating hemolytic streptococel on plates
only a very approximate picture of the degree of
air contamination in rooms can be obtained. Epi-
demiological investigation should always be accom.-
panted by a serological identification of strains
Lsolated. It should always be borne in mind that
at different times different strains of bemolytic
streptococci are found. The relationship between
endemic strains of hemolytic streptococci and strains
isolated during the period of scarlet fever epidemic
should also be taken into account.

Abstract LAuthors' En lish aw-amary modified]: One of the main
causes of ram infertility is infection with Br. ovis which
brings about partial or complete degradation of the sperm. As
the most dangerous epizootic, moment for transmitting the disease
is natural interbreeding, artificial insemination in infected
flocks is recommended. The changes in the sperm diagram of
infected animals involve the density, mobility and presence of
materials other than the 3perm, such as epithelial and white
cells and Br. ovis. Volume changes are not characteristic, but
there may be color changes in the ejaculated sperm.

lPolyvirWlalcohol of 48 000 molecular weight was dissolved in one of the olec-
:tronodonor polar solvents (pyridines dimethy1formamide, or dimethylaulfoxido) and

iwas treated with various amounts of di-n-butylboron chloride (DBBC). The mixture
!was heated to the desired temperature for different lengths of time and the
;resulting polyestars were subjected to elementary and infrared spectral analysis.
iThey were also tent-ed for hydroxyl group content and solubility in various solvents.
Jt was found that at 80-100C and a 12- to 24-hour duration of the reaction the
;degee of esteriVication amounted to 13.6-36.5%. In a pyridine and dimethylfcrmam-
ide media the percentage of hydroxyl group substitution was little affected by the
ratio of the reactants., while in dimethylsulfoxide it showed a marked rise with
!increased DBBC content. Another series of experiments revealed a slow acceleration;
~of the reaction rate with time in a pyridine medium. In dimethy1formam1de,, and
especially in dimetlWlaulfoxide, the esterification proceeded at a much higher rate
iand. at a faster acceleration. Calculation of the vitrification tenparatures for the
