TEXT! Basic Reactions: 2MgO + 2CaO + FeSi = 2Mg + 2CaO.SiO2 CaF7. added to the heated and
ground dolomite together with FeSi. The mixture is pressed into bricks which are reduced at 1250OC-13000C
and vacuum of 10-2 Torr. in either electrical or retort furnace. The Mg, which is then refined by remelting,
is of 99.9% purity. The technological side of the production has been worked out. The problem of utilization
of the slag and of rebuilding of corroded retorts were solved. There are 4 figures.

The author regards bronchogenic carcinoma as 'basically radiosensitive, becoming
radioresistant only In the course of supervening pulmonary processes, especially
Infection'. Radiation failures are ascribed to thefar-advanced stage of thediseascor
inefficient irradiation. The author reports an experience with radiotherapy of 482
patients with bronchial cancer (1950-1955). About 2116 (101) were given radical
therapy (many 4000 r. turnour dose in 4 to 5 weeks). The description of the tech-
nique is not clear. Both 200 kv. and 800 kv. beams were employed with a 'focused
technique'. Contraindications to radiotherapy include Jores' cavern, severe bleed-
Ing, multiple lung metastases. turnour invasion of large vessels andnorid tb.
Treatment Is augmented by high-protein diet, blood transfusions and antibiotics.
Some 65 patients lived more than one year after radical treatment; 5 lived 5 yr.
The type of histology did not influence survival. The author believes that by treat-
ing the primary plus the mediastinal area good results can be obtained.

Title : Reaction of Complement Fixation in Equine Abortion Virus.

Abstract : With the aid of RSK-358 samples of equine sera were tes-
ted; 250 from the Northwestern portion of Khorvatia,
where virus abortion prevails) and 108 from districts
where no such diseases were observed. Effectiveness of
2 RSK methods was tested (Randall C.C. et al, Proc. Soc.
Exptl. Biol. and Med., 1950, 75, 465) and a modified me-
thod of the same authors (Doll et al., Am. J. Vet. Res.,
1954, 4o). In the first method the results were recorded
on the basis of 50% hemolysis: positive results were ob-
tained in 42 cases. In using the second method the recor-
ding was made only by a total fixation of the complement;

Abstract t The complement-linked antibodies of mares' abortion viru-
ses wera examined in the serum of 32 grippe-affected hor-
ses and 293 healtby animals. The complement fixation test
was positive in the majority of diseased horses and nega-
tive in almost all the healthy One3. The authors consider
that this confirms the relationship or identify of the
indicated viruses,

Abstract: In Dalmatia, a goat infection was observed whose
pathologic and anatomical characteristics are similar
to those of the so-called "heart-water" diseasa caused
by Rickettsia runinantium. Sheep and large horned cattle
were also affected. In goats, this disease is charac-
terized by its taking an especially acute course and by
high mortality. Its clinical, pathologic and anatomical

data are described. In the organa ef dead anir-als (spon-
taneously ill or experimentally infected) minute coccoid
corpuscles resembling rickettsiae were discovered. These
corpuscles were successfully cultivated on ben embryos.
The authors are of the opinion that the causative agent
of this disease in goats and sheep of Dalmatia is the
same one, and that it is probably a rickettsia resemb-
ling the causative agent of the "heartwater disease".
